This is an excellent book, if like me you are working on WW1 research. I set out to give a talk to my local history group on the 18 men on our village war memorial, 18 largely forgotten men, and using the 1911 Census I achieved this. However, what I hadn't expected was that we would want more, now 3 of us have set out on the 'Abbotskerswell Roll of Honour Project, and Bridger's book has proved an excellent background for understanding the Great War and its organisation. Anybody who wants to to understand the war, but not read a history of it should use Bridger's book, he explains what things are and not why or gives dozens of examples. His most used phrase is 'but that's not for here'. I meant to dip into to to help my understanding, but I ended up reading it to gain a picture of the war and help me put into context what our 18 did for their fellow villagers.

I picked this book out because the title on various online reviews stressed it was about the Great War. It is - but only if your ancestor was a soldier. You will find detailed info on Battalions, trench warfare etc but if - like me - you were looking for the same level of info about the RFC/RAF you will be disappointed.

This is an essential reference source for any WW1 historian/teacher, and great reading for anyone who is researching a family member that served in the Great War. With drawings, photos and diagrams it allows us to study everything from an 18 pounder shell, to the 1914 christmas tin. Can't recommend this enough!
