This is a really comprehensive guide that starts even before you get a puppy by giving useful information on different breeds and their needs.

The main training sections take a logical path through puppy and dog training. Useful as a guide for a new dog owner but also as a reference for more experienced owners that need help with particular aspects of training.

Well written and an entertaining read (It is written from the dogs perspective). Recommended if you are even considering dog ownership

5.0 out of 5 stars Before you buy that puppy... 23 Dec. 2012
By Brandeline - Published on Amazon.com

This is a very useful little book for anyone thinking about getting a puppy. Starts off very cute with the forward "written" by one of the author's pooches, and continues in a good natured and slightly humorous take on dog ownership throughout.

The selection of an appropriate breed can make or break the relationship, and this book will give you some great tips on how much activity the different breeds need, their affection or working tendencies and sizes which will be very useful if you don't already know what kind of dog you want.

Also includes some excellent information on training puppies to get rid of bad habits including common problems such as peeing, barking, biting, and jumping. If you want to have a great relationship with your new dog, this book will get you started.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Dog Training Guide 13 Jan. 2013
By Nicole - Published on Amazon.com

This book provides comprehensive dog training advice and insights from people who have actually known the experience of having a puppy/dog and explored the various techniques that are available to help train your pooch.

In a different (and entertaining!) way, their story is recounted through the eyes of their own dog as they share what has worked, what hasn't, and what you may have to be aware of as you apply these techniques...as each dog has their own personality and needs.

I particularly like the list of breeds and their temprements etc. As a dog lover with my own training experiences and the joyful benefits that come with having a dog in your life I recommend this book if you are about to bring one of these wonderful creatures into your own family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helped with my new puppy 23 Dec. 2012

I just got a puppy and well first off, I wish I had got this book beforehand. It has an amazing section on what different breeds tend to be like to help you pick the right one for you. But Scruffles is already home with me so we are committed. This book has been helpful in helping me to teach him right from the start. We've still hit some bumps in the road, but with this book I think we'll get there!
5.0 out of 5 stars If You Want a Puppy, Buy This Book 24 Dec. 2012

Hands down, this is one of the best books I've read about training a puppy. Although I don't currently have a dog in the house, I've been considering it but it's been so long since I had a puppy I wasn't sure I was ready to go through the training part. However, this book gave me such good insight into puppy training and how to avoid the pitfalls that I'm far closer to make the puppy decision. The book covers all that you'd want to know, including choosing the dog that's most appropriate for YOU (it appears a Golden Retriever is best for me!), command training, house training, manners, feeding and diet. I'm just glad I found this book before I went out and made a poor choice in type of dog - and an even worse choice in how I trained him.
