World-renowned tenor Plácido Domingo is joined by Angela Gheorghiu, Roberto Alagna and a host of other international stars including Susan Graham, in the famously glittering 1996 Gala Concert on the stage of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. "The central figure of this gala is clearly Domingo. He sings most often and he even takes over as conductor during the Lehár waltz. Furthermore, while he conducts we are treated to a screen montage of some of his great Covent Garden roles. He is a worthy central figure, however, and this disc merely confirms that 1996 still saw him in his very long prime. He throws himself into roles as diverse as Faust, Le Cid and Nemorino with equal ease and convinces as all of them: his voice still has the burnished ring at the top...Everyone on stage is clearly having great fun, and the chances are that you will too.

positively delighted with the artistes and the program selected. The clarity of
the actual DVD also impressed them. They have given me this feedback and
the 5 star rating. "A thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining item!
The gala was given in England a little over a decade ago. Placido
Domingo was at his very best, and so were all the performers.
I especially enjoyed his duet with the gorgeous Romanian singer Leontina
Vaduva, from "L'Elisir d'Amore". Vaduva also performs a song from
Donizetti's "Don Pasquale". She has a gorgeous voice and so much charm.
Other highlights for me were the Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna duet
from "Carmen", and Angela's solo song "Muzika".
This is a perfect concert! Highly recommended!
