5.0 out of 5 stars This Wine Ages Well 28 May 2011
By Dr. Debra Jan Bibel - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
This album is a treat. First, it consists of two original albums from 1958 and 1959. Second, it features Gil Evans' arrangements, so filled with rich harmonies and bright solos backed by a powerful rhythm sections and horns. The liner notes include the original issues and new commentary, wherein I learn that Gil Evans was born Ernest Gilmore Green in Toronto, Canada and he first examined classical music beginning with the French Impressionists. We chiefly know Evans from his collaborations with Miles Davis, and the success of the album Miles Ahead provided the label support to take on some familiar standards, a 1931 reefer tune, and a few originals, such as La Nevada. Included in his sessions were Cannoball Adderley, Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Cutris Fuller, Jimmy Cleveland, and Budd Johnson. These recordings, 76 minutes in total, were wonderful decades ago and they remain delicious and full-bodied.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grab It! 24 Mar. 2010
By Andrew - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Perhaps more appropriately titled, "Gil Evans Plays Standard featuring Cannonball Adderley", this is breathtaking jazz which to this day does not sound at all dated. Evans's signature orchestral style is applied to well-known tunes that all aficionados know well, with ample solo space given to Cannonball's alto sax. The arrangements are lushc exciting, filled with orchestral colors from warm blue to hit, with precision section work and an incredibly propulsive rhythm section that includes legends Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones, Art Blakey. Cannonball's playing is typically swinging and drenched with blues. In short, an incredible idea given incredible execution; buy it before it goes out of print again!
