5.0 out of 5 stars Every Mother Needs This Book! 2 Jun. 2010
By J. Bass - Published on
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I have sent a copy of this book to every mother I know! My son is 2 and 1/2, and I have been following Jeannette Bessinger's recommendations since I introduced him to solid foods at 6 months old. To this day, he is an exceptional eater with a healthy palate and enjoys fruits and veggies that many of my friend's little ones won't touch. He eats the meal that I prepare for the family (not needing a separate meal of "kid food"), including things like chicken with root vegetables, any kind of steamed veggies and fresh fruit, and healthy alternatives in today's world of processed food. I understand that there is concern about having the time to prepare these things - I am a working mom with a full time job, a husband who travels, and no nanny or other in home help. The principals in this book are easy and do not require a great deal of time to follow. I encourage every mother to try it, what an amazing difference it makes in the health of our little ones. I now have a newborn, and am looking forward to using more of the recipes provided here as she grows! This is a must have, as it is everything we need to know about nutrition for our children, and certainly far surpasses anything that has ever been provided to me by my pediatrician. An exceptional resource!

5.0 out of 5 stars More than just a recipe book-- much more... 3 Aug. 2010
By Maxwell the Dog - Published on
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
While this book has many great recipes, it is much more than that. It is really a guide book-- one that will help you navigate the pitfalls of processed, non-nutritious, unhealthy foods that abound today, and instead find REAL foods that your baby/toddler will love. It doesn't have to be all hotdogs with mac & cheese...

The book is full of information on developmental nutrition, healthy food alternatives, and age-appropriate guidelines for what to introduce and when to introduce it. I wish we had something like this for our first!

I think the best thing about this book is that as your child develops, you introduce him to real foods-- like the kind you eat as an adult. They offer great suggestions for adjustments to flavors when you might need them so new foods are not instantly rejected. But these foods are not hidden (like other books suggest). Instead, by introducing foods as they are, your child learns to eat the same foods we do. The sooner you can do this, the sooner your child will be eating whatever you prepare for yourself-- which makes life much easier (and healthier-- I am amazed at how some parents who are very healthy eaters feed their children absolute crap because "that is what she will eat").

This book is full of creative ideas and is a great guide for new parents (or even experienced ones). It is not preachy, and it is backed by science. Kind of like a "Food Rules" for the under three-year-old set. We give it away with all of our baby gifts, because if you follow this book's advice, you will be giving your child a gift that is far more precious than any toy or blanket. You will be giving the gift of good health.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Buy 31 May 2012
By Levi Hart - Published on

I am currently making my own baby food and this was a very beneficial buy. I also bought The Best Homemade Baby Food on the Planet (# 2 choice) and The Wholesome Baby Food Guide( could have done without). Out of the three books if I had to choose one I would choose Great Expectations. The other two are okay but really just are glorified cook books that give the food cute names and have nice illustrations. I was looking for that as well as solid nutrition information and explanations of how much and when etc. Great Expectations gave me all that and more. While my baby has not yet had any known allergies it gives you tons of information on that as well as when to introduce certain foods(ages) and why. It also has the added benefit ( as the other two do) of whether it freezes well. It had much more information then the other books. As an added bonus the information is from people in the field of medicine which is more comforting then Jane Doe who did a pretty good job at feeding her kid and now wants to make a book( no offense Jane Doe). It also offers information on the psychological aspects of eating like developing good habits. Lastly the recipes are solid, they don't require a lot of ingredients but add a little flair like a dash of cinnamon (etc.) and you still feel like your helping develop your little ones pallet without having to be a gourmet chef.

5.0 out of 5 stars Single, First Time Mom 11 Mar. 2012
By Chrisaree - Published on

I absolutely love this book. As a single, first time Mom, I was stressing about having the time, ability, and knowledge to feed my daughter appropriately. This book alleviated almost all the stress for me. I say almost all because I have various allergies that run in my family, but hey she discusses that issue too! I have a busy, busy 4 month old and I was able to read, thoroughly, the book front to back in 2 days. So very informative and gives information and options for several different eating lifestyles. I cannot state enough positive words about this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good go to book full of useful information about nutritional needs of infants! 7 July 2013
By Amazon Customer - Published on

This is a very good book full of useful information about the nutritional needs of infants. I bought this book 4 months before the baby was due i only read the information in it when the baby enters new nutritional stages (i.e. breast milk and formula feeding; first foods; when to introduce meats etc...). Its a great book to go to when your wondering what food are appropriate for your baby. I'll be using this book for a few years to come i think. I definitely recommend it.
