Are you a millionaire? Are you likely to become one in the foreseeable future? No. Okay, so Great Escapes is probably the closest most of us are going to get to this selection of stunning holiday homes from around the globe. Glossy photography by Simon Upton permits intimate access to some divine dwellings of the hyper-rich at rest. Perhaps more interesting than the obvious opulence, is the fact that many of these homes belong to the architect who designed them and are a true labour of love and imagination.
Location dictates the structure of the book with chapters on Rural Escapes, Waterside Escapes, Mountain Escapes and so on. These retreats range from a steel-decked futuristic super-structure that overlooks the LA skyline, to a quaint ski lodge nestled in the Swiss Alps to a medieval castle in the hills of Sicily. The text, supplied by Judith Miller, is detailed and engaging, providing insight into the inspiration and working plans behind these beautiful homes, though you might be able to live without some of the pseudo-philosophical observations that spring up from time to time. Great Escapes also outlines the extraordinary lengths that some people go to in order to relax. A key example being the architect who has to take a flight from Mexico City, travel for hours by four-wheel drive, ford a river that may or not be impassable depending on weather, then trek through the jungle before arriving at his beach house. How relaxing!
Apart from the fact that without exception the properties contained in this book are simply amazing, it's more than just a real estate catalogue for the well-heeled. Those of us with more down-to-earth means can still benefit from Great Escapes as a reference guide for some innovative colour schemes, bizarre building materials and ingenious furnishings and use as inspiration for design plans that might otherwise have passed us by. So, even if you don't win the lottery, you still have a fighting chance of transforming your existing living space into something more unusual. Great Escapes may help you steal some of the decorating secrets that the wealthy few have literally paid a fortune for. --Tony Martin
A lucky few are able to escape the mundane realities of life, retreating to homes in some of the worlds most beautiful places. Great Escapes joins the owners, detailing their experiences, and revealing what makes these places so special.'

Great Escapes takes you on an amazing journey into some truly stunning homes in exotic locations. The content is faultless; there is a perfect balance of intelligent and informative text and breathtaking photography throughout, which makes this book unique. I particularly like the use of subcatergories (Rural, Waterside, Mountain , Woodland and Urban escapes) to divide up the entire contents and I think that all the locations are well chosen. It makes ideal Sunday afternoon reading, and leaves you feeling completely relaxed, inspired and uplifted. Unlike many books in the Architectural category which feature pages and pages of dense text, sketchy illustrations and minimal photography, I would highly recommend Great Escapes to anyone!
