This is a very varied book. It has thirty-six little sections, which include descriptions of how Christmas used to be celebrated and some recipes. Although I’ve read around twenty Christmas books, I found there was plenty of material that was new to me in this book. The Welsh custom of the Calennig is an example of something I haven’t read about elsewhere. The book is beautifully put together, with some nice old illustrations and even though it is compiled from many sources it seems to flow. It’s not Dickens heavy, which these compilation Christmas books can be (Dickens is wonderful, but if you want lots of Dickens you can just read Dickens). The compiler has done some fascinating research on Christmas crackers and she shares her own memories of Santa’s grotto visits. I’m now putting this in the Christmas section of my bookshelf to be enjoyed again another year.

I had hoped for some detailed information about Christmas in the past, but found that this was just a collection of quotations. Readable, but not what I was looking for.

Not quite what I was expecting but has some interesting articles. This book is a collection anecdotes and extracts from works previously published, whereas I had thought it would be a history of aspects of the British Christmas. Not bad though.

This is a lovely little book full of great stories of Christmas traditions and Christmas in the past. Researched and written well with stories, memories and traditions from across the UK. Have also read Jane Austen's Christmas and Bronte's Christmas, both books by the same author also very entertaining, providing an insight into where our current traditions came from. The short and distinct chapters mean it's easy to put down and pick up again - good for busy Mums. Perfect Christmas present for a Mum or Grandmother.
