1.0 out of 5 stars Obscure songs, music leaves a lot to be desired - DON'T BUY 17 Mar. 2006
By T. Custance - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I bought this book for the guitar.

There are a handful of songs in this book that are great staples of the American childhood. The majority, however, are too obscure to even attempt.

I purchased this book along with the "Big Book of Children's Songs", also from Hal Leonard. Let me tell you, they are like night and day.

1) The songs in the other book are more playable/singable/recognizable than this book.

2) The music in this book is horrid! I don't know who transcribed it, but they must be tone deaf! There are a couple of songs that are duplicated between the books and the music is COMPLETELY different.

Buyer beware.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good selection of popular songs 24 Aug. 2001
By Stephanie Giovannini - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This is a good selection of songs. Some of the songs are traditional, but many are more recent songs from musicals, TV and movies. I remember a lot of these songs from watching Sesame Street growing up. The accompaniment varies in difficulty. The book is hard to keep open on a music stand.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Great Big Book of Children's Songs 27 Aug. 2000
By Sheri - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
All children love to sing! My two girls and I, ages 5 and 2, enjoy sitting at the piano singing songs from The Great Big Book of Children's Songs. Great melody introductions and easy playing. Great tool in bonding relationships with young children.

3.0 out of 5 stars Guitar Novices Beware! 14 April 2007
By D. MCDONALD - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
While this book contains songs quite appropriate for a children's songbook, it also contains some of the most challenging guitar chords I've ever attempted! While I'm not an expert player by any means, I haven't encountered any other book with as many obscure chords (e.g., when was the last time you played a Bb7#5?). The target audience appears to be more at the expert level--this is evidenced by well over half of the songs being in tough keys to play on the guitar (principally Bb, Eb, and F).

If you're looking for a book for singing around the campfire with easily-recognizable guitar chords, try Rise Up Singing: The Group Singing Songbook (15th Anniversary Edition) instead--it has many of the same songs in easier keys.
