Product Description

Review

Magnificent … a beautiful look at the unsung heroes of the trade. --It's Nice That

A gem - an impressive academic achievement, packed full of stories ... there's so much to enjoy in this book, starting with its actual design ... this repository of visual material adds up to an inspirational sourcebook. But unlike many other beautifully illustrated publications, you will want to do more than just look at the pictures - you will want to read it --V&A Magazine

Elegant ... the book's glory lies in the stunning illustrations ... readers may have a tough time not drooling --The World of Interiors

Chock-full of nearly 800 illustrations of engraved frontispieces and title pages, handbills, posters, catalogues, type specimens, pamphlets, advertisements and product labels. --Creative Review

Excellent... a colourful cornucopia of visual and technical extravagance... For any student of the history of art and design, David Jury's book is thesis material of a pretty high order... [the reader] is skilfully immersed in a wealth of delightful and fully-captioned examples of fine printing... fascinating and memorable. --The Birmingham Post

About the Author

I have always been drawn to old printed ephemera and never known the story behind these intriguing works of art, nay, design. In that sense, I feel as if this book was written just for me! It answers so many of my questions and does so in such a beautiful, articulate way. It is clearly thoroughly researched and there is so much inspiration to be gleamed from the impressive array of reproduced works. A wonderful addition to the designer's bookshelf!

HASH(0x90c47258) out of 5 stars A remarkable book 29 Dec. 2012

This book has impressed me so much I had to write a review. I've yet to see a book with as many fine examples of 17th-20th century typography and printing techniques as this one. The book is filled with exquisite imagery from a variety of design eras and what makes it truly remarkable is the quality of the writing. Each image is thoughtfully captioned and the overview of the progression of the printmaking and jobbing trade is thorough, interesting and never drags on. The production of the book is also top notch; the paper choices and type setting are fantastic. If you love the history of graphic design and typography, you need this book.

By P. Golden - Published on Amazon.com

I studied graphic design at Pratt Class of 67. I went on to a career in the commercial printing business. Brings me back to an era predating computer graphics. This book could not possibly speak to me in a clearer voice.

HASH(0x90c47c18) out of 5 stars Unique Survey of early Advertising and Graphics 9 July 2013

This is a very entertaining look at early Type Design and Graphic layout before
the job title "Graphic Designer" was part of the job market landscape. A beautifully-
presented overview of Graphic Design styles and Trends from
early days. Many of the outmoded products being advertised here
are outlandish and hilarious by today's standards.

I bought this for my daughter the graphic designer. She thought it was fascinating. She liked that it was a design book about "pre-design"
