Grace is going through her late grandmother's things at the sheltered accommodation where she lived when Dale walks through the door to view the room for his dad. He's Grace's ideal man and she instantly nicknames him Heaven on Legs, the only problem is he thinks she's a resident as she's been playing dress up and is wearing her grandmother's clothes, right down to one of her wigs and a pair of glasses!
Instead of laughing at the situation she'd been caught up in and confessing all she decides to introduce herself as Louise. The pair sit down and chat and as Louise she finds out things about Dale that she wouldn't have if she was herself.
Using her granny alter-ego Grace charms her way into various social situations as a means to find out more about Dale, not knowing that Dale is inviting her along as a prospective date for his widowed father. At other times Louise would send her niece along to these events in her place and that's how the pair officially meet.
But juggling Grace and Louise isn't always easy and she has a couple of close encounters before she's rumbled by friends and family. Will they understand and more importantly will they keep quiet?
Granny with Benefits is a refreshingly delightful read full of laugh out loud moments cleverly combined with the reality of being single later on in life when all of those around you have settled down.Read more ›
In fact it surprised me by how refreshingly different it is. A story full of humour but also tinged with sadness when Grace inspects her life. She is approaching forty and needs a miracle if she is going to find life truly begins then. She is wanting to change and head in a new direction but I never would have thought of her approach.
She was in her own little world of memories clearing her deceased grandmother’s things from the sheltered home when in walks a gorgeous man to view the room. Now this wouldn’t have been a problem ordinarily but he picked the precise moment that Grace was trying on granny’s clothes and wig! Absolutely mortified she remains in ‘character’ while she talks to him and from there on her problems begin.
A whole lifestyle story unfolds whereby Dale and Grace (Louise) begin to form friendships and she is in a dilemma trying to juggle the two women. Grace fancies Dale or HoL (Heaven on Legs) as she dubs him but feels he has a deeper relationship with ‘Louise’.
All begins to become fraught when friends and family start to suspect or unravel the scam. I really enjoyed the way Grace develops, she has to realise that being single isn’t so bad. She has a gorgeous nephew but doesn’t seem to have any maternal instinct at that time, there are some classic giggle moments.
I’m not sure I would get along with Grace if I met her but Dale could certainly be entertained!Read more ›
Not your traditional chick lit/romcom as the ending didn't pan out as expected - though this might change if there is a sequel - it nevertheless kept me entertained right the way throughout.
The premise is ludicrous (but in a good way) and the fact that Grace carries on her deception to the point of no return left me doubled up with laughter. The story is certainly funny and a darned good read - in tone and style it reminded me of Bridget Jones' Diary. The author's style of writing is engaging and so are the main characters; all of them have distinctive personalities and each one is carefully drawn.
Please, Ms Bennett, tell me there's another book after this one!
