'A touching, sometimes funny, often wise portrait of grief' Kirkus
Heartbreaking and hilarious in equal measure, this novel by the author of the New York Times-bestselling phenomenon A Man Called Ove will charm and delight anyone who has ever had a grandmother.
Everyone remembers the smell of their grandmother's house.
Everyone remembers the stories their grandmother told them.
But does everyone remember their grandmother flirting with policemen? Driving illegally?
Breaking into a zoo in the middle of the night? Firing a paintball gun from a balcony in her dressing gown?
Seven-year-old Elsa does.
Some might call Elsa's granny 'eccentric', or even 'crazy'. Elsa calls her a superhero. And granny's stories, of knights and princesses and dragons and castles, are her superpower. Because, as Elsa is starting to learn, heroes and villains don't always exist in imaginary kingdoms; they could live just down the hallway.
As Christmas draws near, even the best superhero grandmothers may have one or two things they'd like to apologise for. And, in the process, Elsa can have some breath-taking adventures of her own . . .

Review
The author's lightness of touch is definitely a contributor towards the novel's success. (It's already a best seller in his native country.) Fredrik conveys much in a few words . . . However a special warning to the ladies summed up in three words: wear waterproof mascara! I read the last few chapters verging between heart-glowing smiles and heart-wrenching sobs. I'll be ready for it the next few times I read it though and, indeed, the times after that. ― The Bookbag
Told with the same comic accuracy and beating heart as [OVE] . . . It is a story about life and death and one of the most important human rights: the right to be different. ― Laura's Little Book Blog
A highly compelling read and it was easy to lose myself in the story ― Off the Shelf blog

From the Inside Flap
Elsa is seven years old and different. Her grandmother is seventy-seven years old and crazy. Standing-on-the-balcony-firing-paintball-guns-at-men-who-want-to-talk-about-Jesus-crazy. She is also Elsa's best, and only, friend. At night Elsa runs to her grandmother's stories, to the Land of Almost-Awake and the Kingdom of Miamas. There, everybody is different and nobody needs to be normal.
So when Elsa's grandmother dies and leaves behind a series of letters apologizing to people she has hurt, it marks the beginning of Elsa's greatest adventure. Her grandmother's letters lead her to an apartment building full of drunks, monsters, attack dogs, and totally ordinary old crones-but also to the truth about fairytales and kingdoms and a grandmother like no other.
My Grandmother Sends Her Regards and Apologises is told with the same comic accuracy and beating heart as Fredrik Backman's bestselling debut novel, A Man Called Ove. It is a story about life and death and one of the most important human rights: the right to be different.

Great discovery of good humans Thanks
This was such a positive and life affirming storyline with each character coming to life via the apology letters that Elsa was tasked to deliver by her eccentric but very loving grandmother. Through delivering the letters - often with adult help along the way (thankfully!), Elsa comes to realise how each individual was a part of her grandmother's story and how each in their way is a friend to Elsa even when it may not appear so at the beginning. Elsa is also learning about the different ways of the world, how her grandmother's stories bore reality and fantasy together and how complex was her grandmother's life. The eventual outcome was not a surprise to me as I saw it coming from a mile away but it was nonetheless so heartwarming and such a generous gesture that it was a bit overwhelming.
I have a couple more of Frederik Backman's books to devour yet and I will be able to set up my own list of favourites from these but this book will doubtless be fairly high up that list as is 'A Man Called Ove'.
Also a go to for inspiration for any grandparent wanting to make there mark. (Use at your own risk)
If I hadn't already read and loved 'Britt-Marie was here', I fear I might have given up about 10% of the way into this book when I was drowning in the fairy tales of Elsa and her grandmother's fantasy world. I soldiered on and by the time I finished, I could hardly read my Kindle because I was crying so much.
Granny seems like such a mad old bird at the start of the book and it's only when she's no longer there to tell her tale that we start to piece together the parts of her life and her home. Once I learned of her return home after the Tsunami and her travels to the world's war and disaster zones, I wanted to know so much more. As each of the characters in Elsa's circle has their connections to Granny revealed, the book gets better and better. As each of their roles in the Land of Almost Awake falls into place, it's like solving an enormous complicated puzzle.
Why four stars instead of five? Well the slow start nearly put me off, and there were a few times where I got the impression that the ages of various characters and their connections didn't quite slot into place. But in terms of the power to move me, the need to know more and to want to move to that block of apartments in Sweden and move in with Elsa, Alf, the Wurse and even nag-bag Britt Marie, this book was stunning.
Why only 4 stars? Just because the reader must be prepared to make an effort to get into the book, as it is not like a run-of-the-mill story, it will demand some effort from the reader. However, that effort will be fully repaid. Not to be missed!!
