From the vaults of Decca comes this historical document of the art of countertenor Alfred Deller. Fine, sympathetic renditions of a wide variety of works are included (whether they stand up to the latest scholarship regarding performance practices of this music is another matter entirely). The "Esurientes implevit bonis" from Bach's Magnificat is particularly light and airy and will bring a smile to your face. The sound is dry but I suspect it was meant to be, as a reaction to many overblown performances of Baroque music in the '50s. The one thing you can hear quite clearly at all times is Deller's exquisite voice, which after all is why we're here. Caution: It IS an anthology, and so excerpts from larger works are the order of the day. If that's okay with you, carry on then. The CD is a healthy 77 minutes long.
