Los Santos: a sprawling sun-soaked metropolis full of self-help gurus, starlets, and fading celebrities, once the envy of the Western world, now struggling to stay afloat in an era of economic uncertainty and cheap reality TV. Amidst the turmoil, three very different criminals plot their own chances of survival and success: Franklin, a former street gangster, now looking for real opportunities and serious money; Michael, a professional ex-con whose retirement is a lot less rosy than he hoped it would be; and Trevor, a violent maniac driven by the next big score. Running out of options, the crew risks everything in a series of daring and dangerous heists that could set them up for life. The biggest, most dynamic and most diverse open world ever created, Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways which lets you repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game's three lead characters, playing all sides of the game's interwoven story. All the classic hallmarks of the groundbreaking series return, including incredible attention to detail and Grand Theft Auto's darkly humorous take on modern culture, alongside a brand new and ambitious approach to open world multiplayer. Blaine County is the largest open world yet - by far - and spanning vastly diverse cultural and geographical areas, the entire world of Grand Theft Auto V is open from the very beginning of the game to explore. In Blaine County you will encounter faded celebrities, meth heads, party people, violent gangs, hikers, bikers and every other manner of colorful denizen. You'll be able to traverse everywhere from the tops of the mountains, through the streets of Los Santos and to the depths of the ocean floor.Read more ›

I bought the standard edition on the release date. And I never had so much fun with a game in the GTA series since Vice City. GTA3 and 4 don't come close. The single player is well done. It's a satire of the post 9/11 and the post financial meltdown age. Or better: it's a kick in the balls. If you do not like what you see in the mirror, just close your eyes and don't buy this game. What happened in real life in the name of protecting our freedom was far worse.

The single player is over very quick. Were the game truly shines is the online multi player. Although at the lower levels, online virtual life can be difficult. At first you lack fire power and financial resources of high level players. High paying missions unlock after you reach a high player level. Online virtual goods are sometimes ridiculously expensive. Also R* steadily decreased the payout of missions, to the point that you spent more GTA$ on bullets than the mission payout.

But that is the way the business model works. Up to now all downloadable content is free. So R* reaches the maximum amount of players, who don't have the cash to buy the new virtual goodies. So a lot of people buy GTA$ with Xbox or PS3 gift cards. Or cheat. R* had to spent more resources on plugging holes, than on new content. And it is very annoying to loose your super car worth 1,5 million GTA$. Or that you have to pay for the insurance of your super car if some looser is camping outside your apartment with a tank. Or that you get shot in your own garage. All these fixes delay the release of content that is worthwhile: The ability to own multiple garages, heist missions or the casino games.

All these drawbacks are made good by the fact that you can be whatever you want to be online. You can do whatever you want to do.

Video gaming has come a long way since the late 1970s and early 1980s. Game budgets have balloned into astronomical proportions and marketing campaigns have become blitzkrieg extravaganas. Major video game titles, like the major "tent pole" movies of the summer Hollywood so heavily relies upon, represent significant investment of capital. If you believe the marketing copy, each of these big budget video games represent the very best the video game industry has to offer. *

Sadly, such hyperbole is very seldom the case, especially with non-Nintendo titles. Unlike Nintendo's IPs, which are consistently recognized as some of the most enthralling, well-designed games out there, and also certainly among the most bankable, newer games must establish such a strong, realised world and marketing presence that big budgets are in demand. While Nintendo and Mario/Link are the family friendly alternatives, there exists an large opening for more adult oriented fare to enter and dominate the market place. Enter Rockstar and the GTA titles which, while always controversail, has long helped bring adult themed video gaming into the mainstream with writing that is both brilliant and deeply satirical of modern day life..

GTA V follows the Grand Theft Auto social commentary satire the series is so famous for, and expands it tremendously, becoming a mirror of post-economic collapse America. Nothing is held back from Rockstar's barbed wit: the game tears apart such recent social realities as Facebook (called Life Invader) and the rather sinister undertones by which Mark Zuckerburg and Co.
