Product Description

Product Description

A beautifully gritty new album from New York's notorious musical time bandits, 'The Grand Slambovians'. The Grand Slambovians, (AKA Gandalf Murphy & The Slambovian Circus of Dreams) have been called "the hillbilly Pink Floyd” - an apt description, particularly if you throw in elements of Incredible String Band, Syd Barrett, Neil Young, The Band, Dylan, and maybe even some Frank Zappa as well. After returning from a 2010 U.K. fall tour where they spread their contagious brand of quirky roots-rock from Glasgow to Penzance, the band completed work on their fourth studio album. The advent of “The Grand Slambovians” is both the band’s latest incarnation and the title of their new manically melodic, soul stirring CD, the culmination of a decade of work together. "Mightily impressive and hugely original..." Maverick Magazine "The entire root system of Rock Family Trees is embedded in Longo's voice."- The Big Issue, Scotland "They may term it 'Hillbilly-Pink Floyd' and sure, they have an air of both Floyd and maybe Bowie at times, atop their folkcountry roots (note, not fauxcountry) but it's done with a warmth and comfort of a mystical Nebraska or poetic Crazy Horse." – Sleazegrinder ADVERTISING IN MOJO REVIEW IN PROPERGANDA TOUR DATES IN APRIL WITH MORE DATES TBC 1st WAVENDON The Stables, Milton Keynes 2nd BARNSLEY Acoustic Roots Festival 8th POCKLINGTON Arts Centre 9th BRISTOL The Fleece 10th LONDON Camden Dingwalls 14th CANTERBURY Gulbenkian Theatre

"Can it be that this is their most accomplished work to date? Musically and lyrically I think lt can. And could it be that 'Northern Sea' is up there with their finest songs? lt could. Five stars? Go on then"

"These are great songs captured in a chaotic, unstoppable and barely describable landslide of an album. Buy it and join the trip" -- Acoustic

"They may term it 'Hillbilly-Pink Floyd' and sure, they have an air of both Floyd and maybe Bowie at times, atop their folkcountry roots (note, not fauxcountry) but it's done with a warmth and comfort of a mystical Nebraska or poetic Crazy Horse."

...Watching the world go by. I first heard of this band when someone on Ken Bruce's morning quiz mentioned that he had just seen Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams in a local gig??? I just had to find out more and visited Slambovia.com to have a listen. I can honestly say I was instantly hooked and this latest offering continues the theme of carefully crafted songs with a laid back hicksville feel. My only regret is that I have not yet managed to get to a concert, which everyone tells me is where they truly excel.

The Grand Slambovians contains just enough rock (especially in the title track and in the Bipolar Express, but really, this is music to play at night, either driving home in the small hours, or in good company, with your favourite glass or two. The music drifts and sways lazily into your ears and Longo's voice echoes the past greatness of Neil Diamond, with a little Dylan thrown in. To my ear, they bring the Traveling Wilburys into the 21st Century. My only regret is that I have only 4 cds to listen to, but I guess quality is produced instead of quantity. Hard to say which is the best, but the Grand Slambovians is as good as anything else they have produced.

Essentially, this is an album review but as GM&TSCD are woefully little known in the UK I am appending what info I have about the band and their recorded works, in case any British buyers wish to explore the band further (something I unreservedly recommend). I'm a British fan and am a relative newcomer to their music but since seeing them at their UK Rhythm Festival debut in 2008 I have devoted considerable time and pennies tracking down as many of their recorded works as I've been able to lay my hands on. I wouldn't claim to be an authority on the band but hope that what little info I can supply will encourage you to do likewise. You will be richly rewarded!

Firstly, the new album. I've been looking forward to this release since the band rolled out a taster of the new material at the 2010 Rhythm Festival. If you read reviews for their 'Flapjacks From The Sky' double LP/CD here on Amazon you might be discouraged to explore it; whilst I respect the reviewers observations about 'filler' I cannot agree. In my humble opinion only 3 of the tracks are dispensable:'Better Life', Big Eight Wheeler' and 'Gonna Get Up'. Apart from those the album is a work of genius and the benchmark against which I have always compared and rated their other releases. With that in mind I was mildly disappointed with their subsequent album, 'The Great Unravel' and I am now applying the same yardstick to 'The Grand Slambovians'.

The first time I played it I felt the same sense of deflation as I did after repeated listening to 'Unravel'. I am now on about my 7th/8th? listen and am rapidly revising my opinion.

Excellent songwriting and playing. Growing reputation in America and now the UK, after a couple of years` visits. Follows on from 3 previous CD`s that are all uplifting and full of classic songs, but at the moment have to be ordered from the states or picked up at gigs. Worth seeing Josia and the band live, and I think they said they were back in October for a fancy dress halloween gig in Camden. Check out the 'Flapjacks' double CD or listen on their website.

HASH(0x94d37c0c) out of 5 stars You'll want to join the Circus 12 July 2011
By Edison Girard - Published on Amazon.com
Gandalf Murphy & The Slambovian Circus of Dreams has been around since 1998, and this is the band's 4th studio release. It's the first using a new trimmer name, but the line-up hasn't changed and the music has gotten even better. Like their previous efforts, this is a quality album that deserves attention.

Previous comparisons have been to; Bob Dylan, Neil Young, The Band, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Neil Diamond, Syd Barrett, David Bowie, The Who, The Incredible String Band, ..I would humbly add; Ray Davies/Kinks, Fairport Convention, and even Gong. They've been handily described as 'Hillbilly Pink Floyd', and that does capture the Americana/British Invasion blend, but there's nothing derivative, ersatz, or intentionally retro about them. This is earnest and soulful music, drawn fresh from an old familiar well that contemporary music thought long-drained.
The Grand Slambovians are GREAT to see perform live, but their original material translates comfortably to the studio. It's warm, rich, well-crafted and sensitively arranged music that you can easily embrace.
Their albums are well produced by co-founder and lead guitarist; Sharkey McEwen, who clearly understands how to bring their unique vibe to the listening audience.

Like previous releases, there are no weak filler tracks on this album. Every song stands on its own merits and it's hard to go wrong here.

Highly recommended.

HASH(0x94e30e4c) out of 5 stars Great Band, Great Message 14 Jun. 2012
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Completely fresh and yet somehow really familiar. Best band I've heard in years. Originally saw them at the Strawberry Music Fest. in Mather California and became an instant fan. Caught them at Hardly Strictly in SF and The Freight and Salvage in Berkeley. Another west coast tour is what we need from the Grand Slambovians! Great new release. Thanks for the tunes. The message? Listen up for the message...

If you have never seen the Slambovians, you are in for a treat!! We catch them whenever we can, and being from New England, we probably see them more than some folks in the rest of the USA. Try to catch one of their shows - you won't be disappointed!

This band has never put out a bad song. Live, they are AMAZING and I see them any chance I get. I bought several of these CD's, one for myself and a couple for lending.
