"Humphreys has a great talent for taking contemporary writing and using it to portray a coherent and fully visual impression of each town, hotel and its occupants, bringing the life of Westerners in Egypt to life"--Egyptological "We must thank Andrew Humphreys for providing a real treat for his readers"--Deborah Manley, ASTENE review ." . . perhaps one of the most interesting books we have seen in a long time; with most of the information collected by reading old travel journals and interviewing people. "Grand Hotels of Egypt" is a remarkable and entertaining book"--Cairo 360 "Andrew Humphreys' "Grand Hotels of Egypt" takes readers back two centuries to an Egypt of socialites and celebrities. Humphreys, a former resident of and frequent visitor to Cairo, artfully traces the rise of modern tourism and the hotel industry from Alexandria to Aswan by channeling the voices of the tourists themselves."--Egypt Today ""Grand Hotels of Egypt" is a visual delight: diverting and informative."--The Egyptian Gazette

Going to Aswan? We stayed at the Old Cataract hotel before it was renovated at great expense - the history and the views are fabulous. We currently stay on Elephantine island and were there in 2011 when the revolution started. This book is stuffed full of fact and photos and brings it all to life. Strongly recommended............we are off for a 10th visit in early 2018.
for the armchair traveller.
All these nineteenth and twentieth century hotels
have a story to tell - and the story is well-written
and colourfully illustrated by fascinating posters and
artefacts from the period.
Anybody interested in world travel, exploration,Egyptology,
the World Wars, colonialism, or North Africa will find this a
valuable addition to their library.
A great trip back in time. Fully recommend this book.
With stunning colour pictures and black-and-white photographs, Andrew Humphreys recreates the Egypt of the earliest European travellers who came to experience the Orient, visit the sites and luxuriate on the Riviera. He tells the stories of Egypt’s grand historic hotels and some of the famous people who stayed in them, such as Ameila Edwards, and T.E. Lawrence.
So why not sail by boat up to the Gezira Palace, admire the Pyramids from the terrace of the Mena House or pop down to the arcades of the Winter Palace for a solar topee and fly whisk?
