About the Author

Alastair Humphreys is a British adventurer, author, blogger, film-maker and photographer. He spent over four years cycling round the world, a journey of 46,000 miles through 60 countries and across five continents. More recently, Alastair has walked across southern India, rowed across the Atlantic Ocean, run six marathons through the Sahara desert, completed a crossing of Iceland, and participated in an expedition in the Arctic, close to the magnetic North Pole. He has trekked 1,000 miles across the Empty Quarter desert and 120 miles round the M25 motorway – one of his pioneering microadventures. He has written nine books and has been named as one of National Geographic’s Adventurers of the Year.

I first heard about Alastair just after he had cycled around the world. I bought both his books about the trip and also went to one of his inspirational talks. I also watched his Youtube videos which inspired me to start making my own Youtube (now over 100). I was 57 at the time and have now turned 66. I still feel inspired by Alastair and last year cycled almost 1500 miles around the EU with two friends. I bought this book to see if I could be inspired to do anything else extraordinary for a pensioner. I really enjoyed the book as Alastair has spent a considerable time researching many adventurers - I never knew there were so many with so many ideas. I see no reason why this book should be appeal to other pensioners - I would hope this book would inspire a lust for adventure in the elderly. Perhaps he should try to get this book in the SAGA magazine - it could bring health back to the elderly!

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this book but I am really glad that I bought it! It's the first book by Alistair I got and I really enjoy it. Heaps of short interesting stories highlighting the ups and downs and practicalities of interviewee's adventures. Loads of good tips how to get around starting your own macro-adventure. I also like the format and that you can read a couple of the stories whenever you have even just 5 min of free time.
Highly recommended.

Alistair Humphreys is a complete legend, and this book could well change your life!

I've read all of Alastair's adult books and loved all of them. Every one has been inspiring in its own way, but it's his 'Microadventures' and 'Grand Adventures' books, and his excellent blog that have had the biggest impact on my life.

I fully admit to being a microadventure addict now, and I've already started saving for a grand adventure. My friends and I have had many nights out wild camping, bivvying, hammocking, adventuring, and exploring this year and we have plans for bigger and better adventures in the future. All inspired by Alastair's own adventures as showcased in his books.

'Grand Adventures' is very readable and chocked full of beautiful and inspiring photos and writing just as 'Microadventures' was, and this book is a natural progression from the earlier one. Both make for great coffee table books and conversation starters. Its obvious that a lot of hard work and effort went in to both of them, and they're real adventure starters!

On behalf of my tribe and I, thank you Alastair!

Another great book from Alastair - one of his best. It is full of passion and enthusiasm for adventuring. The format is very accessible. You get a truthful view of different types of adventure from those who have executed them. The photographs, the layout and the upbeat writing are a joy to read whether you are planning an adventure of your own or just want to enjoy the challenges of others. A must read. Buy it now!

Inspiring and fulfilling. This book hopefully gives the reader the nudge required to turn wistful thinking of adventure into a solid plan. It doesn't have all of the answers and gives no kit list or particular suggestions. It does encourage you to follow your own path.

Absolutely fantastic book! A perfect follow up from microadventures... At first I was inspired to go out and try my own microadventures (and even tempted the wife into a garden sleepout!). Now with this book, its encouraged me to dream big, get rid of the guidelines for prescribed challenges and go do whatever i fancy! (Salisbury to Switzerland anyone?)
Absolutely amazing! Thankyou so much!

Firstly, I hate to blemish Alastair's perfect 5 star rating. Secondly, this is a wonderful book - it's of very high quality and I've seen people pay double for a lovely photography book to sit on the coffee table. The pictures are stunning and of high quality and Alastair's writing is always of the best quality in the adventure world. I give him great credit for how evident it is that his words are his always his own.

However, I'm not giving it a five star for two reasons. Firstly, having been an avid reader of Alastair's blog for many years I was a bit disappointed to see that his interviews with fellow adventurers (that I'd already read on the blog) made up a reasonable portion of the book. Secondly, I thought I was getting a book that would be a bit more about how to do these things. This book is more about convincing you to commit to doing them.

So, if you're jaded from 21st century life and feel there is more to the world and you need to be convinced to go on an adventure then buy this book! If, however, you are already convinced to go on an adventure and are quite knowledgable, then buy this book and enjoy the photography and the quotes from various extraordinary people.

(Sorry for blemishing your record, Al)

If you have ever considered going on an major adventure this is a very dangerous book because it will give you all the tools and motivation to actually do. The personal stores and advice in it are fantastic as they come from those who have and are doing what those of us who have decided to buy this book find interesting. I can't recommend it enough. The quality of the images and structure is perfect. My only concern about reading it is that it's taking another excuse away from me and I might just have to follow the advice given and do it!
