HASH(0x92ec1a98) out of 5 stars very useful suppliment to an Intermediate level ESL text 16 Sept. 1999
By A Customer - Published on
Format: Paperback
This book is very useful as a suppliment to texts which incorporate context and practical usage. The explanation page is somewhat cumbersome for the student to handle alone, and some of the vocabulary is difficult for the grammatical concepts presented, but the exercises are great, and with a native speaker teacher to provide answers to the inevitable vocabulary difficulty, it is a great tool. Recently in a Tokyo bookstore, I saw an advanced level edition, which is not yet listed on the amazon search.

HASH(0x936e0e34) out of 5 stars One of the best English references out there! 17 July 1997
By A Customer - Published on
Format: Paperback
English is my second language. I've spent 2 years studying it, but it didn't go well, because all references or guides I had didn't explain all quirks, caveats, and catches of English language, which is, as we all know, is full of exceptions.

I have spent 4 weeks this month searching for a book that would help me perfect my grammar. Finally "Grammar in Use" caught my eye. This books explains all basic and advanced rules (and exceptions) of English language with unsurpassed clarity. This book always answers all of my questions, whether it is a simple one or a complex one. There are many units that cover nuances, caveats, and detailed differences, which are always a trouble for people who are learning English.

Even if English is your first language, I strongly recommend you getting this book, because it will make your English a lot better than it was.

While listening to announcers, dictors, reporters on TV or radio, whose English is really good, you still can sometimes spot a grammatical mistake in their speech.

Noone is perfect, but "Grammar in Use" can bring you really close to perfection.

HASH(0x936e0d80) out of 5 stars Best teaching aide I have ever come across 6 Mar. 1997

Format: Paperback
I teach English in Japan. This book has become my greatest tool. The simple organization of this book makes it easy to understand and also a useful reference guide. There are times when my advanced student will ask me a question as to why something is said in a certain way and I just can't seem to be able to tell them, I can go to the book and find the answer. It has become a "don't leave home without it" tool in my teaching profession. I highly recommend this book

HASH(0x931ee210) out of 5 stars Very useful for ESL student 31 Jan. 2002

I bought this 3 or 4 years ago. I like it very much. This book really helps you with your difficulties in English. There are pictures and illustrations which indeed are great helper. Furthermore, the examples are quite adequate and easy to follow. It is professionaly organized. I recommend this to ESL students because I am also a non-native speaker of English.
HASH(0x92c477ec) out of 5 stars Excellent grammar book for non-native speakers 28 Sept. 2001

Format: Paperback
I have used this book for a number of years, while teaching in Germany and while teaching non-native English speakers in the U.S. My students have invariably liked it: it is well organized, nicely formatted and provides good examples. Although it may be too simple for "intermediate" students with languages related to English (e.g. German, French), I have found it to be the correct level for "intermediate" students whose languages are not similar to English (e.g. Korean, Chinese). Nonetheless, it is an excellent, comprehensive review for speakers of European languages as well who are not yet truly fluent. Some grammar books are bogged down in details and simply overwhelming, but this one is so well organized that it makes the lessons manageable.
