Well, I found that persistence pays off with these cans and gradually noticed a very clean sound emerging from the purple haze. The vocals are clear, rock guitar sounds wonderful, drumbeats have proper snap and decay and bass is clear and sweet and stays where it should. These are great cans for rock, indie and pop. I use a Fiio X5/E12 as my front end and the overall sound I get is close enough to neutral. I'm no fan of thundering bass which drowns out everything else, I want a neutral sound with just a hint of warmth. These cans can manage without a headphone amp but really do benefit from amplification. I even plugged them into my smartphone and PC and got a pretty decent listen.
First up, I use these as PC and laptop headphones, so I do a lot of gaming and also listen to metal, dance, rock and other heavy music. They were not very good on their own and didn't sound much better than my previous Chinese gaming headsets - thin and lacking all bass. Then I did some reading and bought a mini-amplifier for them and the sound came to life. Turns out the motherboard-mounted sound chip doesn't kick out enough watts to drive anything more than earbuds, and my previous headsets were USB powered so I'd never noticed. Cool! A bit of tweaking in the equaliser and these phones sounded full of bass, rich in the middle and crisp at the high end. Great sound, right?
Well, it isn't all good. Out of the box it is clear the build quality is poor. The plastic moulding is rough or even crude - I'd wager Grado has been using the same moulds to make the SR60/80 series since it was created decades ago and the dies are worn out. The headband is basic, but it does adjust well enough and they're so light I didn't find it uncomfortable. The earpads are also fine to wear for a few hours even with glasses on.
Now the really bad stuff. These stopped working in the right ear after about seven weeks, after my return window closed. The sound is very quiet, and crackles heavily sometimes cutting out entirely. I'm out of pocket over £100 for a pair of headphones that is now useless. I don't know if this is the infamous Grado rattle or 'grattle' caused by hair getting stuck in the driver (because the driver is so exposed), or if the connection is shot somewhere but it's clearly a design flaw. I am not happy with it. My old el-cheapo headphones lasted years and years of being dropped, overdriven, abused and uncared for until the cable finally got pulled right off them. These fancy brand ones couldn't even make it to two months.
The 5 stars I gave it were mainly for the sheer sound quality at this price point. These are open backed so they're only meant for home listening. I personally like the retro look but many don't but they seem to be built well. The foam pads are reasonably comfortable.
Now for what your money really buys you: SOUND
- Amazing detailed mids. The mids are where they really shine. Any vocals sound outrageously good.
- The bass is accurate and detailed but it doesn't overpower everything else like some of the modern, teenybopper targeted headphones. The bass just hits a sweet spot for my preferences. If you're worrying about the oomph, don't because its definitely there.
- The highs are great too. I heard that the SR80i highs were fatiguing but I think the new drivers in this are mellowed out on the highs
People who don't mind listening at home. Good for Rock(especially Rock), Jazz, Blues. They're decent for Pop, EDM as well.
Using on public transport or noisy environments. Forget about it. They leak a lot of sound and let the environment's sounds in too. Not good with very bass heavy music.
Know what you're getting into when buying these and you wouldn't be disappointed. The first time I heard these, I was floored with the sound quality and didn't want to take them off ever. Also, you might want to upgrade all your tracks to 320kbps or more if you really want to take advantage of these. The difference is VERY noticeable. Make sure you have a decent in built DAC as well. I don't think these need headphone amplifiers though.
