HASH(0x945f6540) out of 5 stars inspired 22 Mar. 2004

jeff has a gift that few film score composers have these days: the ability to find the great melody. This score has one of his best, and it is breathtaking... you'll want to hear it again and again.

HASH(0x94914684) out of 5 stars So close to what it should've been and yet so far 18 Oct. 2004
By John Wheeler - Published on Amazon.com

Mostly because of the music featured on the Web site's original previews, I've seen THE GOSPEL OF JOHN -- both the movie (in theatres) and the DVD. Also, I'm very familiar with the recordings published by Esther Lamandier that were cited in the movie. I was pleased with the richness and diversity of Jeff Danna's film score, and so naturally I wanted to hear this soundtrack.

Regrettably, that rich diversity is largely missing on this album. Where is the marvelous, ethnic-sounding music of the wedding at Cana, for example? While the music chosen for the soundtrack is excellent, it focuses mostly on a very few orchestral themes arranged in ways that differ not all that much from track to track. But the addition of ancient and early instruments and the use of ancient modes is certainly very well done, as is the sampling and interweaving of vocal tracks performed by Mme. Lamandier.

One nit I especially want to pick is the way Mme. Lamandier's contributions are described. The liner notes (and the Web site) cite her as being "renowned for her soulful realizations of ancient Hebrew music. Integral to the score are the Aramaic chants sung by Ms. Lamandier." Well, "The Prayer" indeed is sung in Aramaic (the melody is taken from Mme. Lamandier's recording of Aramaic Christian chants), but only one other fragment in the film seems to be in that language. All her other, all-too-brief contributions are performances of biblical Hebrew texts: Psalm 93, the Song of Songs, and the Priestly Blessing. (This last text is used twice, in the tracks "Mary Washes Jesus' Feet" and "Follow Me"; the others do not appear in the soundtrack.) The Hebrew melodies themselves were restituted from the Masoretic accentuation by Suzanne Haik-Vantoura, who is nowhere mentioned in the liner notes or on the Web site, but who thankfully is mentioned properly in the film credits. Her choral arrangement of Psalm 121, likewise cited in the film, does not appear in this album either. (See the book and the recording called THE MUSIC OF THE BIBLE REVEALED, sold elsewhere on Amazon.com.)

Overall, this is a very good album, but it could've been better still. If memory serves, surely the original film score was not so surprisingly repetitive as this soundtrack!

HASH(0x945a6384) out of 5 stars Breathtaking! 27 Nov. 2011

Beautiful score from a beautifully done film. The soundtrack stands alone, as well. Rich, varied and very moving. As others have already said, it bears repeated listening. I want to know more about the period instruments and the sung texts, so will probably buy a hard copy to get the liner notes, even though I have already downloaded in iTunes. Highly recommended!

HASH(0x94a2369c) out of 5 stars Evokes reverence 11 Sept. 2010
By Megabit - Published on Amazon.com

I got hooked on the soundtrack from watching the movie. Quite fond of the songs Here Comes Your King, For God So Loved the World, The Lamb of God, Jesus and Nicodemus, The Prayer, Solomon's Porch, Cast Your Nets, Follow Me. They sound similar to one another: somewhat middle eastern tempered with soothing strings or pure and holy singing. I still play this CD about every other week. It lends a touch of reverence to a meal or chores. Love it, except that the placement of the "Jesus at the Temple" track really disrupts the flow and mood of the CD as a whole. I'd do better to copy it to a new CD without that track :)
HASH(0x9478ad68) out of 5 stars The Gospel of John Movie Review 5 April 2016
By Jeremiah Sanderson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The Gospel of John movie begins depicting the ministry of John the Baptist, who was the one crying in the wilderness. He was making the pathway straight for the coming of the Lord. John is the one who establishes the way of Jesus. After Jesus is introduced, the movie takes us down the path that Jesus walked such as choosing his disciples, teaching them the way, the synagogues, about who he is and about Heaven. He also depicts the Life of Jesus going to Calvary, performing miracles, and the many that tried to destroy him. Jesus then arrives at Golgotha, which is called, "the place of the skull", and shows plenty of passion for the people. We cannot forget the resurrection of Jesus Christ, which shows the risen Savior, the last days with his disciples, and returning back to his father in Heaven.

There are some inconsistencies in which I don't agree. The movie is taken from scripture, but not the King James Version, which is the original 1611 version. I think that scripture should be quoted accurately and not watered down. Also some, other inconsistencies, the movie doesn't really depict what Christ went through, it shows a whip, but not the real scourging and beating. I know that this version is taken from John's point of view, in which all the gospels depicts Jesus’ life and what he went through different.

The dramatization of this movie does depict some authenticity with the dress wear of the actors. It always makes a difference with the music, clothing, because some movies go just a little bit to far to take a movie and add props that didn't exist in the biblical times. So I think that this movie does have some authenticity to it to make us feel like we were there...I would recommend this movie because it brings some biblical times to life.

The Gospel of John relates to World Religion because of Christianity. Some religions don't believe in Jesus Christ, but as a Christian, I believe that Jesus is the Son of the living God. This movie depicts the life of Jesus according to John. Christianity is the world's largest religion as of 2010, but according to an article on NPR, the Islam religion is growing more rapidly than any other religion given by the Pew Research Center.
