Barenaked Ladies ~ Gordon

Amazon.co.uk

On this, their debut recording for a major label, Canada's quirkiest musical troupe introduced the world to their unique blend of scathing humour, skilful musicianship, and flat-out fun. Packed with songs that have become anthems to their adoring fans, Gordon is practically a collection of Barenaked Ladies' greatest hits. This CD features "Brian Wilson", an homage to the biggest Beach Boy and an exploration of the relationship between art and neurosis; "Be My Yoko Ono", a musician's entreaty to his winsome muse; "Box Set", a relentless indictment of one-hit wonders and washed-up rockers; and the staple sing-along "If I Had $1,000,000", which you can walk around humming all day without getting bored. Literally every song on this disc features the intelligent lyrics, tight arrangements, and astonishing vocalisations that BNL have made their stock-in-trade. It's a winner all the way around. --L.A. Smith

This album by the strange canadian geeksters is just a gem. A strangely cut little gem, but still a gem. It has everything; sing-a-long melodies, heartfelt ballads, witty little ditties. A song about Yoko Ono, love songs, songs about childhood, songs about love found and love lost. What would you get if you had $1000000? Okay, it's not to everyone's taste musically, but the lyrics will reach everyone who has a soul. Five gold stars and a letter of recomendation for Gordon. Buy it now.

Gordon is an amazing album. Something in it for everyone. From the very beginning of "Hello City" you know this is gonna be a little strange - but fantastic all the same. "Enid", "Grade 9" and "King Of Bedside Manner" are pure comedy, as is "If I Had A Million Dollars." However, for me the standout track (and not by much as there's hardly a fault to any) has to be "The Flag". Let the music move you in this song. It's the reason I bought the album and thank god I did because it's never far away from my CD player. "Put Your Arms Around Me" has to be the best realistic and sweet love song I've ever heard. "Brian Wilson" and "Blame It On Me" both sweep you along in the melody. The parodies of fame - "Boxset" and "New New on The Block" are addictive. Honestly isn't a bad song on it. Anyway, can you guess that you really really really should but this?

Simply put, Gordon must be the best Debut album. Ever. It is not an award I would bestow lightly, and whist my music tastes seem to change daily, Gordon, in the past few years I've had it, has never entered a period of dislike.
The Ladies' way of portraying life in such a truly comical manner with so catchy tunes is sheer class. The lyrics are completely singalongable, though when you look at them you can often read some deeper meaning.
On a desert island with only one CD, this would be it. No questions asked.

The Barenaked Ladies debut release (or at least their major label debut) "Gordon" remains my favorite from the group. That is not to say that they don't have other very good CDs, but this one has such a wonderful collection of varieties and quirky songs that it would be difficult to top. Fortunately, they continue to try, so we get to enjoy all their efforts. "Gordon" was released on July 28th of 1992, and though it was quite successful in Canada, that success didn't cross any borders. Nevertheless, it does contain some of their biggest hits and fan favorites.

"Hello City" starts things off, a less than flattering look at Halifax, but still it is good fun. "Enid" is the first single from the album ("Be My Yoko Ono" was released before the album was recorded), a song about Steven Page's first girlfriend, but named for a waitress due to her name being "dine" in reverse. "Grade 9" is a song which pokes fun at adolescence and how awkward we all feel during that time. "Brian Wilson" is another single from the album, and a song which remains as an all-time fan favorite. The lyrics are written from the perspective of someone identifying with Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys after he was diagnosed with mental illness. "Be My Yoko Ono" was the band's first ever single and won the band a prize which allowed them to make this album. The lyrics talk about giving up everything to be with someone, i.e. their personal Yoko Ono.

Next up is "Wrap Your Arms Around Me", a song completely different in feel to all those which came before. The lyrics are also not clear, undoubtedly on purpose, mixing images from a normal healthy relationship, with those that could be taken as violent against another.

Yes Barenaked Ladies first Studio release back in 1992, and what a great one it is! With all the strange haircuts, and bizarre photos. Gordon is one hell of an album. A Must buy for any Ladies Fan. With songs such as "Enid" and "Brian Wilson" you will never have to buy a CD ever again!!

Any BNL fan worth their salt will always point to this record as being the BNL album to end all BNL albums. And they wouldn't be wrong. All the classic BNL staples are present and correct - clever lyrics, great hooks, emotional sincerity, and that instantly recognisable quirky sense of humour (ok, so it's crazy with a 'k' but we'll forgive 'em - they're Canadian after all).
Gordon is the natural successor to their previous independent releases 'Barenaked Lunch' and 'Buck Naked'. The band have cherry-picked the best tunes from those two records and added them to a bunch of new songs to deliver a powerhouse of an album.
An essentially acoustic affair, the band shine brightest on the ballads 'Brian Wilson', 'What A Good Boy', 'Wrap Your Arms Around Me', 'The Flag', and 'Blame It On Me'. This gravitas is countered by throwaway tunes like 'Grade 9', 'Be My Yoko Ono', 'The King Of Bedside Manor', and BNL anthem 'If I Had A Million Dollars'.
One song that has taken on an added sense of relevance in more recent years is 'Box Set'. In it Steven Page sings...'I never thought I'd be regretful of all my past success / but some stupid number one hit single has got me in this mess'. One Week, anyone?
Buy this album to experience BNL at their unadulterated best...
