5.0 out of 5 stars Stunningly brilliant 17 Sept. 2012
By Roy E. Whitman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Russian-born classical guitarist, Vladimir Gorbach, gives a 'tour de force' performance in this stunning recording with his Segovian virtuosity and an unearthly subtlety of hand. At times playing with smoldering passion and at others with surgical precision, Gorbach makes the guitar sing akin to a Rossini aria during Maro Giuliani's 'Rondoletto,' and hum resemblant of a Spanish lullaby while performing Vicente Ascencio's Suite "Collectici Intim." His mood of play is more joyful and exuberant when playing the sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti. Gorbach displays amazing technical capabilities with Astor Piazzolla's 'Spring-Summer-Fall-Winter Portenos' when he alternately slaps the guitar with his hand, performs trills and pizzicato, and even plays with one hand. Nothing short of a genius at his craft, Gorbach could make the guitar sound as if wild equines were crying in the distance and then come galloping feverishly to a crescendo. The tones emitted from his guitar were both brilliantly clear and bravely somber with chords echoing like distant thunder off each other. Superlatives are no justice for this Russian virtuoso. He is, to borrow from Lermontov, a true 'hero of our time.'
