The bulb is very very dim. I appreciate you don't want it to dazzle, but it's not even really detectable unless you're pretty much in darkness. The second issue however, is more serious:
The gooseneck doesn't hold in one place. When you position it and let go the neck immediately starts moving back to a position it finds more comfortable. It might be possible to keep experimenting until you find it stays in the place you want it, but if you need to concentrate on different parts of your console you don't want to be continually having to set it and keep re-adjusting until it ends up in the position you want it. Bear in mind the dimness of the bulb, and you do really need to position it fairly directly to see anything.
So I consider it not fit for purpose. I returned it and the vendors refunded the product price, although they haven't refunded the postage costs. I also haven't had any emails from them, either when I requested the returns label or when they made the refund, so I had to keep logging in to Amazon to find out what was going on.
