Fifeen remastered episodes of the legendary series that broke the comedy mould.
About the Author
Spike Milligan was perhaps best known as one of the Goons. He went on to become one of Britain's foremost comic writers and performers. His bestselling titles include Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall, Puckoon and Where have all the Bullets Gone? He died in 2002.
Larry Stephens was a scriptwriter who wrote for several popular comedy shows in the 1950s, including The Tony Hancock Show and The Army Game. He is probably best known as co-writer of many Goon Show episodes, along with Spike Milligan. He died in 1959.
Maurice Wiltshire was a screenwriter and script editor who wrote for many television programmes including The Army Game and HMS Paradise. He co-wrote several episodes of The Goon Show, as well as adapting 26 of the radio scripts for two series of a 15-minute television puppet show called The Telegoons.

The BBC only holds recordings from the beginning of series 5 onwards. Some series 4 episodes exist (and are finally being released in a separate edition here: The Goon Show: Series 4, Pt. 1 (Golden Age of BBC Radio Comedy)). Series 1-3 are, sadly, totally lost to us. Hence, this definitive collection began with series five, and aims to release all extant recordings the BBC still hold from all subsequent series.
If you're looking here you don't need to be told how good the humour is, so I will just review the release itself. Volume 7 collects the 14 of the first 15 episodes (Episode 7, The Red Fort is sadly missing due to the now infamous rights issues with EMI. It is a pity, these occasionally missing episodes are a real mar for an otherwise excellent set of releases. The script, for the missing episode, in PDF form on previous releases, can be found at a website listed in the liner notes) from series 8 across 7 discs, with some usual fascinating extras on the seventh disc. The remastering is worthy of especial praise. In the main these episodes sound much better than they have in any other release.Read more ›
Some shows are not owned by the BBC so this is not a compete set of extant audio.
This an excellent collection and Kendall's work in restoration and restoring missing bits is exemplary.
The BBC pricing of this Compendium has been out of kilter with its worth though. When first released, the sets are pricey.
