When I was in the third grade I won a contest in a newspaper for creating a character called "Lurgy the Bird" and living in "The States" I had never heard of "The Goon Show". It's ironic that years and years later the first episode I ever heard from the Goons was "Lurgi Strikes Britian". I was shocked and amused at the same time. It's still my favourite episode. So far this has been one of my favourite Goon Show collection. It includes some of the best episodes in my opinion including "Napoleon's Piano", "The Great International Christmas Pudding" and "The Flea". Spike Milligan is a brilliant writer who excels in absurdist humour and mangling words. This collection is a must for any Goon fan or new fan or anybody who is curious about the Goons. Have a gorilla.

I've just become a big fan of the Goon Show, and being able to buy these episodes for such a low price was great. I enjoy being able to listen again and again to these episodes, and encourage the BBC to release more of the 250 or so episodes on tape and CD.

I guarentee you will be unable to stop screaming the above peculiar word once you've listened to the sublimely silly 'Lurgi Strikes Britain'. This is my favourite Goon Show story: Superbly bonkers and brilliantly performed by Harry, Peter and Spike.

Throughout all the stories there are terrific musical interludes performed by the Ray Ellington Quartet (listen to that gorgeous voice. Why wasn't he a big star?) and the harmonica player Max Geldray.

This is the Goons at arguably their finest. This is the BBC... Will anybody start the bidding?!?!?!

If you know about the Goons then you probably like them. They were the inspiration for Monty Python. The Goonshow was on the radio nearly every week for ten years, so the question is: where to start? My answer is this album. Everyone has their own opinion as to the best episodes, but if you don't like Napoleon's Piano then there's no hope for you! It really is a gem, together with International Christmas Pudding. Here they are on one album. Start here.
