This laptop is a luxury item, both in its quality and its superfluous nature. The screen is truly beautiful, and the touchscreen works exceptionally well, especially once some of the flagged experimental options are activated. The touchpad and the keyboard are also the best I have used. Battery life is 5 hours as advertised, and can be stretched further if you need it to. Start-up is almost instant, and the system works extremely quickly and quietly. Despite this, I would recommend it to virtually nobody, as the question comes down to whether ChromeOS works for you.
- Do you spend most of your time in a browser?
- Is google docs a good enough replacement for Microsoft Office?
- Can you do without programmes such as Skype and Photoshop? (Equivalents, albeit not as powerful, can be found in the Web Store)
- Do you use Google Music, or another web-based programme to listen to your music?
- Do you have a web-enabled printer, or have another computer from which to print?
- Do you use other google services - Drive, Gmail etc?
- Do you have a fast and reliable internet connection, and are you happy for your files to be stored online?
If the answer to those questions is yes, or you have another Windows/MacOS computer that can handle the functions that the Pixel cannot, and if you are prepared to spend a large amount of money for the luxury of the build quality, the speed, and most of all the screen, then this device MIGHT make sense.
For me, it does, and I consistently enjoy using it, much more than my windows devices. For that reason it is a five-star device, but in the same way that a sports car might be five-star - you shouldn't buy it if you have children, no other car, and need to carry building supplies in it.
This is a fantastic computer - for the right person.

chromebooks are like other notebooks, apart from a few major differences ;) they pretty much need the internet otherwise they are limited to whatever apps work in 'offline mode' chromebooks are generally cheap and have stand displays but do offer great storage in the cloud (the usual chromebooks offer 100gig of google drive storage free for two years)...

the chromebook pixel is different from all other chromebooks because it is much more expensive and it has an amazing screen! (plus google offers 1TB of cloud storage for three years for free once you buy one!)

the screen is incredibly sharp and is also touch enabled , other i dont find myself actually touching it.

the design of the keyboard is great, it has a very nice feel, its backlit and has good travel on the keys, the top line of keys which usually are the function keys on a laptop are replaced with more web orientated keys and controls

the machine start very quickly from a power off, 6 seconds or so and wakes before you have the screen unfolded, by the way its designed in such a way that the screen can be lifted with one finger while the base stays flat , this is due to the piano hinge used.

the industrial design and the screen is what you are paying for, there is limited storage on the machine itself, 32gig i think, but you can play .mp4 and mp3 files when offline with no hassle. you can also compose emails and write google doc files, although you cannot edit the spreadsheets yet, you can only view the when offline.

This computer is just great. In my book the highlights are as follows:

1) Super fast start up from any state
2) Beautiful screen
3) delightful keyboard and touch pad
4) Smooth operation, hardly any slow down at all compared to windows operating systems
5) Generally a pleasure to use - backlit keyboard is a nice luxurious and practical touch. Hot keys are sensible and I live the ability to easily switch between different language inputs by simply pressing shift and alt together. Brilliant for my language learning endeavours!
6) light, sleek and compact
7) High quality clear speakers, vocals sound great (Well for what you can expect from inbuilt speakers)!

Drawbacks:
1) it can heat up a bit on your lap especially when playing music, watching videos
2) Battery life is OK but for the price, at least an equivalent to macbook in battery life would have been welcome
3) Can do alot of your basic every day tasks but beware as some other more specific uses become problematic i.e. I wouldn't sell my windows laptop but keep it in reserve for anything that the netbook can't handle. e.g. if you don't have a cloud-print feature enabled printer, you can't print anything!

Update: Oct 2015 and still going strong. Have had very few issues with this netbook and use it almost every day for my english teaching job, even being able to effectively connect it to a projector using an HDMi adapter I've bought

I bought my Chromebook Pixel direct from Google, fully expecting to return it within the 15-day return period once I had taken it for a spin. But, you know what? It was so good... I kept it! Despite the hefty price tag.

Having used other Chromebooks such as the "cheep and cheerful" Samsung Chromebook Wifi (Launched Oct 2012), and being more concerned with their function rather than their form, I surprised myself by falling in love with the potentially gimmicky and indulgent features that set the Chromebook Pixel apart from other Chromebooks:

1. The display really is awesome, even when simply browsing the web and noticing the sheer sharpness of the on-screen characters.

2. The sound is really awesome, nice and loud despite the fact that you can't see the speakers (which are hidden under the keyboard).

3. The touch screen is surprisingly useful for scrolling up and down through web pages and documents, and I seem to be able to hit the right buttons on screen with less hit-and-miss than I have experienced (for example) when operating the Microsoft Surface (32GB) web browser in desktop mode.

4. I love the solid feel and square simplicity of the aluminium casing on the Chromebook Pixel.

As explained in
