I would have given this record five stars if the sound quality is slightly better. But the scratchy old records give another dimension to this particular type of music as if the sound coming from an old wireless broadcast. So, I don't mind it much. In this album, the focus is on Bowlly's specialty, slowed down romantic love ballads, with an emphasis on the work at times borders on easy listening and standards. But I would say it's more easy listening in terms of the selection of songs than jazz here. But the whole album is cohesive and one song to the next flows well together. There is a rare rendition of "The Very Thought of You" which is different from other versions he sang. The soft romantic mood wavers in the whole album.

There is languid, dreamy version of the title track, "Good night, sweet heart" .There aren't too many arrangers left who can write in the old romantic, melodic style with a lush orchestral arrangement with strings like Al Bowlly's era. If you like this kind of music, I'd recommend to listen to the records of Steve Conway, Denny Dennis, and Tino Rossi.

That's the subtitle of this compilation, which is a more accurate description of its contents than the overworked song title. It features three bands; those of Howard Godfrey & his Waldorfians (2 titles), Roy Fox (14 titles), and Jack Leon (4 titles). There is an error on track 18, which should read "24 January 1931 (b)". There are some real rarities here, particularly "Dance Hall Doll", and it's well worth looking out for at the right price.
