Originally released on LP in 1974, the entire contents of this album were recorded at the famous Memphis Stax Studios. Many people are not aware that Elvis in fact held two recording sessions at this studio, which were used on 3 different albums. After the great success of the Aloha from Hawaii show in Jan 1973, Elvis was keen to record again in Memphis. American Sound was no longer available, so for 5 days from 21st to 25th July of that year he laid down 10 tracks at Stax, which went onto his "Raised On Rock album". Between the 10th & 16th of December he returned again to the studio on McLemore Avenue, which was a convenient 12 minute drive from Graceland. In that time he taped 18 really excellent songs, 10 of which are on this album. The remaining songs went onto his "Promised Land" album. Song choice is a very personal thing, but of the 3 albums of material Elvis recorded at Stax this is my personal favourite. There is really not one bad track on here, but if you've not heard "Talk About The Good Times" with it's amazing piano solo 'crossing the room' in stereo, then you ought to buy it just for that! This CD is a straight re-issue of the original LP, but painstakingly remastered and sounding better than ever before. Try it!!

The album that includes songs like "Talk About The Good Times" and, my own personal favourite, "Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues", we are led to believe this is where the title of this seventies Elvis album came from.

Another underrated album of work from 'The King' but a most thoroughly enjoyable one, and one which should be mentioned in the same sentence as Elvis' "Promised Land" and "Today" albums.

I love Elvis' 1970's body of studio work and don't really have a real bad word to say about such albums as this, as opposed to the mediocre and downright sappy material he was recording ten years previous on such soundtracks as "Girl Happy", "Roustabout", "Harum Scarum", "Frankie & Johnny" and "Paradise Hawaiian Style"...'nuff said.

I admire the arrangements and instrumentation on "Good Times" which also delivers a few recordings which bear gospel tones - the soulful "I Got A Feelin' In My Body", the heartfelt "If That Isn't Love" and the rockin' jamming of the aforementioned "Talk About The Good Times". The cover of "Lovin' Arms" is something else to behold and is quite rivetingly haunting. The hit singles are featured on this album too - the country based "I've Got A Thing About You Baby" and the blistering ballad "My Boy" are both welcome additions to any Elvis 70's fanatic's collection.

But, for me personally, RCA saves one of the best Elvis performances until last with the beautiful r&b of "Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues" which will leave one with a wonderful feeling of melancholy anticipating another spin of this CD album.

I expected this to be a traditional 5” 2cd set, and i was pleasantly surprised to find this ‘deluxe’ 7x7 format, as it really helps do Elvis landmark studio albums justice. It’s a partial reproduction of the original 12” artwork (more a tribute really) with a nicely appointed 7” booklet that has a front cover that the original album ought to have had! RCA were notoriously and frustratingly garbage it designing the cover art for Elvis albums, so the graphics included in the booklet are refreshing.

Many of the out-takes are available on the album Essential Elvis Vol. 5 – Rhythm & Country, which is fairly disappointing as i think Elvis fans would have preferred entirely unheard takes instead, as this set makes much of the material on that aforementioned CD redundant, especially since most of those who will fork out the £20+ for this set will already have the Rhythm & Country CD. However, this release does acknowledge the fact in the accompanying booklet.

The original album is of course here – tracks 1 – 10. The rest is a copious selection of out-takes, rehearsing, and chat, much of which is funny.

This 7x7 set will sit wonderfully in between your Elvis At Stax and Prince From Another Planet 7x7 sets, and I thoroughly recommend it, though you might as well give your remastered copy of Promised Land to a friend and buy the FTD edition of Promised Land instead, to go along with this (and the FTD release of Raised On Rock).

Considering the eye-watering prices of all the FTD releases, really they ALL ought to be of this 7x7 format.

I wonder if any of the discarded takes of We Had It All still exist?

It is mind boggling that Elvis didn't make Stax studios his permanent recording base. Not only was it just a few convenient minutes away from his Graceland mansion but his recording output at Stax was undoubtedly some of his best of the seventies.

And this special album is testimony to that claim. The studio suited Elvis' recording style perfectly in that the musicians area was large and comfortably accommodated his rhythm band and backing singers. Elvis always recorded 'live' with the entire band playing together. He relied heavily on eye contact with his musicians. Only the strings and horns were added later. In addition, the studio was acoustically perfect and this comes across glaringly in the recordings.

The 'Follow That Dream' (FTD) label here gives us an enhanced version of the original 1974 album recorded in two sessions - in July and December 1973. Elvis was on top form vocally and the song material was a mixed bag of rock,,rhythm & blues, soul, funk, and country. But the real beauty of this extended album is in the extras, which includes a sea of outtakes and studio jams of the album tracks. And you'll love the handsome FTD packaging and accompanying information booklet. Very attractive.

Suddenly you're a fly on the wall at the famous Memphis studios as you listen in on session banter and exchanges between Elvis and the musicians and engineers. A great atmosphere with Elvis at his usual accommodating self and enjoying the moment. One thing that comes across abundantly is the fun they have while recording and the respect for one another.

This is one of the most popular of the FTD series and deserves to take up space in your collection.
