About the Author

The Good Schools Guide was founded in 1985 by Amanda Atha and Sarah Drummond, two parents in search of schools for their children. They visited hundreds of schools and wrote about their experiences in the direct and independent style that still characterises the Guide. Twenty-five years later there are over fifty editors, spread throughout the UK, coordinated by Ralph Lucas; most are parents with young children, a few a former heads and senior teachers.

This was recommended to me by a friend. We use the website but wanted the actual book to refer to as well. It's very, very big and while I can't imagine anyone ever reads it from end to end I found myself laughing out loud at some of the reviews I saw when flicking through. We are looking at state, grammar and, possibly, independent options for our children and this guide certainly helps get over a flavour of each school and gives an idea of the kind of child a particular school would suit. You can tell that the reviews have been written by parents because they focus on the kind of thing a family would want to know.

I got the book, but it did not have 1 review on any of the schools i was looking for. so was therefore a waste of my time and money.
Not sure if there is a way to find out if the schools you are interested in, is in the book before you buy. I would advised you to contact them first before wasting your money.

We bought this to help identify prep schools in the area that we are considering moving to. None of the schools we are now considering are included. It was quite interesting reading about other schools, but the book has not been useful at all for what I bought it for. This is not a comprehensive guide to private schools in the UK - or even to good private schools in the UK, so not really the book that I thought it was.

I need to relocate from Cambridge to Sussex. Unfortunately not all schools I was considering were listed in the guide, e.g. Farlington School (Horsham) and .Pennthorpe. However, the book made me discover a school which I was not aware of.

Surely a fine and useful tome except that so many schools are excluded, including many prominent on their neighbourhood.
