Product Description

Review

Zelda la Grange has a singular perspective on Nelson Mandela, having served as his long-time personal aide, confidant and close friend. She is a dear friend to both of us and a touchstone to all of us who loved Madiba. Her story of their journey together demonstrates how a man who transformed an entire nation also had the power to transform the life of one extraordinary woman (Morgan Freeman and Lori McCreary, Actor and Producer of "Invictus")

Uplifting. . . generally charming, occasionally faintly indiscreet, but always reverent. Surely no one but Mandela - with the possible exception of the Duke of Edinburgh - could have got away with greeting the Queen with a cheery: "Oh Elizabeth, you've lost weight!" And it is fun to learn that the former leader of the ANC's guerrilla army maintained a rigorous skin-moisturising regime in prison and beyond. When the manufacturers of Mandela's favourite preparation, Palmer's Body Lotion, ceased production in South Africa in the 1990s, elaborate measures had to be taken in the presidential office to procure supplies from America (Sunday Times)

A searingly honest, moving and entertaining account of her years orbiting President Nelson Mandela . . . an excavation of white (particularly Afrikaner) identity and one woman's painful blossoming of a deeper consciousness. . . . Between the rich anecdotes of Madiba's numerous encounters with the world's powerful, wealthy and (in)famous - which she witnessed at close range - as well accounts of his personal quirks, virtues, foibles and torments, La Grange's book sets out her own journey from naïve, completely unaware, conservative white South African to more conscious human being (Daily Maverick)

A delightful, delicious read packed with anecdotes (John Carlin)

Compelling and ultimately heartbreaking ... her unguarded honesty allows her to tell a remarkable story (Telegraph)

I am so enjoying reading "Good Morning Mr. Mandela" - it's a book that absolutely everyone should read. Written with honesty, and sensitivity, it is a story of reconciliation and hope for all of us. Zelda La Grange gave up most of her adult life to serve Nelson Mandela. And he - with his extraordinary wisdom and insight - gave it back to her - enriched a million times over. This is a beautiful story of a young Afrikaans girl, hand-picked by Mandela to be his aide-de-camp for 19 years. Through her eyes we see once again, a hope for this country (South Africa) - and we gain a fresh insight into the life of this amazing man we lovingly called Madiba.

Zelda La Grange takes us with her into the transformation of an conservative young Afrikaaner to a full guilted member of the rainbow nation. Through many heart touching anecdotes we get real glimpses of Mr Mandela not only as a brilliant politician but also of his personality that makes him the greatest statesman ever lived. Zelda - thanks so much for letting us inside!

Warning! Adjoa Andoh's reading of this book is absolutely dreadful. She should have read it in her normal voice, not in a phoney "Afrikaans" accent, which is not only inaccurate but inconsistent and unconvincing. And while she's about it, how about learning how to pronounce names correctly, instead of butchering them the way she did. She doesn't even pronounce the author's name correctly, let alone Nelson Mandela's name. And her rendition of names such as Beeld, Vergelegen, Strydom and so on is nothing short of disgraceful.

Having said that, if you have to listen to the audiobook and are willing to put up with the author being insulted for 14 hours, the story is fascinating. Rather get the print book or the Kindle edition. The audio book is a fiasco.

I enjoyed reading this book as an unusual look at Nelson Mandela's life. It is not terribly well written and Zelda Le Grange's views are very limited - she does not have a deep understanding of international relationships. But in some ways this is also a strength, since she tells us right from the start that this is a very personal account of this unique relationship with a very important man. Everything is seen from her perspective and the pictgure she paints is fascinating. If one knows a bit about what was going on around them, this account can be fitted into a wider picture and throws ligfht on some difficult relationships - between Mr Mandela and his family and between him and the government that succeeded him in office. I would certainly recommend it - it's very readable, but it would help if the reader knew a bit about the wider picture too.

Not particularly well written but an extraordinary person who dedicated her life to Nelson Mandela, and who her own culture were frightened of and believed he was a murderer. Her courage was and is amazing. She provides a very personal view of firstly the impact Nelson Mandela had on her but also a very personal day to day understanding of Mandela and his personal pressures, that she did her utmost to minimise. So different from any of the other books written about him, and I certainly know him better, know more of his frailties and for that reason, he is so much more real.

I would have loved to listen to this book and fortunately sampled it before buying.
Having lived in South Africa all my life, I am yet to come across such an appalling accent anywhere.
Why, oh why ruin the chances of what may be a worthwhile book with such an inauthentic put on?
The only question I have on the matter is who on earth would have suggested such butchery and why?

This is a personal recollection of over 20 years of service by Zelda La Grange who became P.A. to Nelson Mandela. Zelda spent more time with Nelson Mandela than anyone else, probably more than inmates (who wouldn't have been together all the time) whilst in prison, so this is a very important primary source in S.A.'s history. Importantly this is a personal journal of someone with their own opinion, and there's nothing wrong with that. You take it as you find it. Initially a very naive, under confident Zelda, gave up much, in order to do this job. You may say you would do that for Nelson Mandela, but having read the whole story, I would like to suggest that not many people could have endured the intense pace that she had to endure, let alone the ageing Mr. Mandela. There were three stages of tough stuff... in the beginning when she really didn't have much idea, the pace of world tours and fund raising, and then finally the awful exclusion surrounding his illness and death. At the end I was simply out of breath, stressing with it all on Zelda's behalf. Wow.
And Zelda if you're reading this, this bit's for you. Your ex colleague suggested this to our Book Club (Lizanne), and I'm so glad she did. As a kid, my father was odd in his closet racism. I could never relate to it, but a child is influenced. By the time I went to Uni in 1983, joing anti-Apartheid groups was obvious and easy for me, because I cannot ever imagine why one human being thinks they're superior to another. The issues were cut and dried - apartheid was all wrong in every sense. But we were miles away and in the days without social media and email. We didn't know that boycotting Barclays bank would help. It did. We blocked supermarket check-outs with S.A.
