Benny Hinn is a controversial figure to many, with opinions spread far and wide on his character, credibility, theology and methodology. However there is no denying his profile or the influence and impact of his ministry.

His book, entitled 'Good Morning, Holy Spirit' is Hinn sharing his insights and views on intimacy with the Holy Spirit. The book is partly theological, partly testimonial. Hinn interweaves his life story, conversion and filling with the Spirit with his insights on what it means to live a Spirit-empowered Christian life. The book is shamelessly Charismatic, and due to the part-autobiographical content is often an unpacking and explanation of Hinn's personal experiences. This for me opened up an interesting question - how much of his scriptural interpretation is exegesis, and how much is eisegesis? Meaning, are his experiences shaped by his scriptural views or are his scriptural views shaped by experiences? This is is more of an observation that a criticism but is something I held in the back of my mind as I read the book.

Naturally, this lead me onto another question - because the book is testimonial, it is as much about Benny Hinn as it is about the Holy Spirit. Therefore, is his story the 'norm' for the Christian life? Or is Hinn blessed with an unusual level of anointing to empower him for his calling as a healing evangelist? Its important to understand that only one of us is called to be Benny Hinn - and that's Benny Hinn. However, there are many principles, insights and lessons that are present in this book that I believe are to be part of the Christian life 'norm.'

Nailing my colours to the wall, I can't say I struggled with anything I read - in fact, quite the opposite: I was challenged and inspired to get to know the Holy Spirit more.

Seeking the power Jesus promised in John 14-16 I've read many books on the Holy Spirit in the past few years and this book has encouraged me tremendously. Benny Hinn describes the power unleashed in his life from coming to know the Holy Spirit in a close personal relationship that is intensely bible-based. So much greater in power and intimacy is the relationship he describes than many christians have experienced that some people have dismissed it as unbiblical and fanaticism.
But wait a minute, laying aside our prejudices shouldn't we go back to our bibles and carefully read what God has promised? In John 14-16 Jesus tells his disciples he is leaving them (14:2), He promises 'another Counsellor' (14:17) saying 'It is for your good that I that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counsellor will not come to you: but if I go, I will send him to you' (16:7). Jesus is talking about a person, like himself 'the Spirit of Christ' (Rom 8:9), yet unseen 'But you will know him, for he lives with you and will be in you' (Jn 14:17)... I could go on.
As for everything in the christian life, Jesus is the standard we must measure ourselves by. If we want to know how great a relationship we can have with the Father and the Spirit we must study the bible to find out what kind of a relationship Jesus had.
'By their fruit you will recognise them' (Mt 7:20). I first saw Benny Hinn's ministry mentioned as having a significant influence on the revival in Argentina. Like Kathryn Kuhlman, the fruit of his life has been great, yet not without mistakes.
This book doesn't fill everyone with the sense of excitement it's given me but if you long to be a vessel for the power of God to fill your life for the benefit of others you must read this. Essential to fully understanding this book is the Benny Hinn's sequel 'The Anointing'.

No matter what your thoughts about the author, this is a must for the development of christian life. Benny Hinn speaks honestly about his childhood and allows the reader into some of the most spiritually intimate times he has had. With a review of Kathryn Kuhlmans ministry being included, the author gentley develops the importance of living life with the Holy Spirit. The characteristics of the Holy Spirit are examined biblicly with real life examples being brought in to emphasize the point. This is a great systematic exploration in to the role of the Holy Spirit, the searching soul will understand some of the aspects that have been missing from their walk with God. My recomendation is that you put aside your preconceptions of Benny Hinn, approach this book with an open mind and I promise you that your christian life will never be the same again.
