I have spent all afternoon in bed reading this book. It will stay with me a long time. It is amazingly inspiring and encouraging to read the story of how this brave, brave woman survived such harrowing abuse and headed into the middle of it to find healing. It is a sad, riveting, captivating, horrifying and ultimately edifying read.

This well-written book describes Carolyn Bramhall's slow understanding of events that have happened in her past and the way that she had been able to cope with them through multiple personalities. It's an exhausting read in some ways as more and more of her history is unfolded and we learn of the different personalities, "alters", within her who enabled her to keep going until the point in early adulthood where it all becomes too much.

Carolyn's recovery is in many ways a testimony to the support of Christian Counsellors and Therapists in the USA and in the UK and it is sobering to reflect how unusual that level of support must be, certainly in the UK from where Carolyn and I both come. Although frightening in some ways, her story is also a demonstration of God's power to deal with anything, no matter how deep-rooted or terrifying.

I purchased this book as a gift having previously read a copy of my own. The book describes the writer's struggle with dissociative identity disorder (DID - previously called multiple personality disorder) brought on by childhood abuse by a group involved in satanic worship. It is written from a Christian standpoint and describes the spiritual steps taken to get free from her pain. It outlines both the positive help she received as well as the harm done by well meaning but ill informed people. In particular, the fact that she exhibited numerous different personalities, had led ministers to mistake these different voices for demons, which they tried to expel. I had been previously unaware of this disorder but having spoken with her after reading it, I soon became aware that I was speaking to more than one 'person' - although substantially healed. This is a book you will not be able to put down.

A Kid's Review on 28 Jan. 2009
Format: Paperback
Carolyn Bramhall grew up in what seemed to outsiders to be a normal home, with hard-working parents, surrounded by apparently caring relatives.

Carolyn Bramhall graduated from Bible college, married, found a job as a youth worker. Then nightmares and panic attacks started to swamp her. She, her husband and two small children moved to work in America, but the internal stresses grew worse - and a host of other personalities started to make their presence felt. In due course 109 separate entities, each created to carry some aspect of truly ghastly past pain, would identify themselves. What could she possibly do?

This book was so illuminating and helpful for those of us involved in prayer ministry for others. It gave keys and insight and the assurance of God's ultimate control and love for people caught up in the most heinous of situations. I have only the utmost respect for Carolyn, not only in what she has lived through but in her courage in sharing it to a mainly unbelieving world. Well done Carolyn and thank you. You will bring many others into freedom.
