Format: Hardcover
This is the first half of the history of the 4. SS infantry Division Polizei. As its title suggests it was formed of police officers with the idea of giving them front line experience. It is also special for it was an infantry Division (unlike the title would suggest) during the years 1939 to 1943 while the other SS Divsions were mechanised and it was at the begining outside the Waffen SS fold, being more a Heer Division and it fought many illustrious battles especially around Leningrad where it earned a well deserved reputation.

All this is in the book and presented down to company level, with plenty of accounts of individuals. There are also planety of dispatches, After Action Reports and the like to support the text as well as first hand accounts. And that is the problem, there is to much in the book to make it easily readable, if fact it is often tedious and tiresome. The maps are also hard to follow easily, they are hand drawn and far from very clear.

The 4. SS Polizei Division is worthy of respect and makes a very interesting subject - and this is the only book in English I know that makes SS Polizei its subject. But it makes a very poor bedside reading and if you have a passing interest in military history the book has very little entertainment value. If that is what you are looking for I'd recommend you look elsewhere, there are plenty of more easily accessable books on the fighting on the Eastern Front. If you want to know everything about the SS Polizei then this book has a lot of information and might be just the thing you were looking for.

HASH(0x8ffeca08) out of 5 stars A good first volume to the 3 volume set. 23 Sept. 2013
By Lynda - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
This first book covers the early history of the Polizei Division up through the switch from offensive operations to the subsequent defense at Leningrad. While it has a point of view to connect with veterans of the division, it factually describes both the overall picture of the various battles as well as adding the human touch with a mix of veteran rememberances and official daily reports. This is a readable unit history that does not become overly bogged down in the details as some unit histories tend to do.

HASH(0x8ffec90c) out of 5 stars Exhaustivo trabajo. 9 Nov. 2006
By F. Garcia Maniega - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
