This is a great diet plan and an even better life-plan. It works, there is no doubt about that (even the scientific community agree) and we are all convinced, even my cynical husband. My daughter needed a structured plan to help with teenage wait-loss but the whole family has embraced the plan to just live more healthily and we feel better for it. Could do with a better index though.
However, don't be seduced into buying the Easy GI Diet by the same author. I did, and thought it would compliment The Good Carb Diet Plan and was disappointed to find that it was exactly the same book but between different covers and a new title. Same pages, photos, same page numbers!

Wow, and I've read them all. This book is large, yes - but not long - and will wow you with beautiful (and motivating) photography. Beyond that, the information is up to date regarding the low glycemic diet approach while also being very honest about how eating low on the glycemic index does not mean an "eat as much as you can stuff in" (unless we're talkin' veggies). It clearly lines up what this is all about, how you can do it and ends with a variety of low gi eating plans that you can follow/mix-match including recipes. Basically the premise is simple. Eat unprocessed natural foods from the fruit, vegetable, lean protein/calcium, legume and whole grain categories (given only a very few certain exceptions in each category- for example most regular breads are not a choice) truly is not a low carb plan, but rather yes, a lowER calorie plan made up of healthy foods that will not send your blood sugar on a roller coaster. Puts it all in one place if you asked me...only one improvement would be a summary page/that puts all the key points together for you. Complete with a list of the gi for most foods, including calories (but don't let that bother you)...if you eat this high fiber - unprocessed - lean protein'll fill up so fast...and have energy - you will be up and OUT the door - NOT looking for any more food. Eat often, eat natural foods that contain fiber, protein and healthy fats...the idea is common sense if you ask me, but most of America/heck the world could use some of THAT you know? Real food, real fiber, real healthy. The only thing else I can say is DUH! So buy the book and display it, because it is truly the coffee table of the good carb books for SURE.

This is not really a diet book, If you are looking to shed pounds in a super fast time this is not for you. This is a food lifestyle change and, as such does a pretty good job. It maps out clearly why too many carbs are bad for you and gives a comprehensive list of foods rated high medium or low carbs. I found this book very helpful in changing my eating habits.

HASH(0x9da4d108) out of 5 stars Very flexible & vegetarian-friendly!! 6 Oct. 2004

This book is awesome. The menus are flexible and easy to follow. Foster does not harp about the evils of sugar and say that all those eating carbs will go to hell. She features a 14-day menu plan for both meat-eaters and a separate 14-day vegetarian menu plan, as well as a 7-day "galvanizer" plan if you are looking to get started in a hurry. I have already seen results and this book was a good way to start. See also "The New Glucose Revolution" if you like this book and want some additional ideas and recipes, as well as a more in-depth glycemic index chart.

HASH(0x9e02ac3c) out of 5 stars Sensible, but has incorrect information 28 Dec. 2004

I have a book called "Easy GI Diet" which might be the same thing. The menus are good (although there's not as much protein as I'd like and not much red meat) and the author explains things well without going in to too much technobabble. Annoyances for me are some of the exercise comments such as "book a girl's night out". Umm hello, males are reading this book too. " will lengthen your muscles". Wrong. There is nothing you can do, except ripping your muscles out and magically extending them then stitching yourself back up, to lengthen your muscles. I really can't stand seeing this in books as it shows a complete lack of proper research. On Day 9 of the meat eating plan Foster says "your clothes should be feeling looser around the waist, hips and thighs". Again, a lack of proper research. Not everyone loses fat in the same areas first, I know for myself these areas are the last to go and I notice weight loss from my bust and midriff long before anywhere else. The women in my family are the same, we lose the fat there considerably after losing fat elsewhere.

The overuse of the word "tone" used with regard to exercise: "such-and-such will tone your body". A buzzword which most people who really know what they're talking about avoid using.

If that kind of stuff bugs you, the rest of the book is good. I personally would have preferred to see a little more protein in the menu plans in the form of red meat but you can always make up your own menues.

Love it! It has a vegetarian menu option which was really helpful. Some of the ingredients were hard to come by in my small town. Had to make trips to the 'big city' to get some of the stuff I needed. Totally worth it though. Some of the recipes are time consuming with alot of prep work. It's worth it though. You'll definitely feel better eating this way.
