The product itself is fine for what it is expected to do, the bucket and drainage slot section fit together OK and it is wide and deep enough to hold enough solids to make it worthwhile.
The issue with this method is all about the drainage and the type of soil you have, If you live on chalky well drained soil you have less of an issue, but still the better you follow their instructions, at the least, the better it will work. If you live on clay you have a much bigger issue. Understand that you are effectively creating a doggy septic tank, and hence you need to have proper drainage, and for the theory to work, the dissolved solids will get washed down through the soil. I live on clay and have come to understand this very well( installing this 4 x over 9 years)! Instructions also suggest that this should not be installed on clay soil, basically because the solids break down, but really don't drain away, from the floor of the hole, much at all. The water will, but eventually the "septic tank" will fill up. Hence if you do this on clay/shale it will have a finite life. Hence the latest installation is a 3.5 ft deep x 3 ft square hole! - filled with chunky hard core( their instructions say 2ft )gravel top 2 inches to stop the soil on top at the edges falling in and filling the gaps created by the hard core ( half bricks/ cotwold stone scavenged rubble etc) We have 2 quite productive small cavalier king charles spaniels who charge around the large garden and dont need excecised elsewhere, so we have to deal with most of their output!!!
In terms of building and setting up the loo, sounds obvious, but it is very important to make sure the slots are not obstructed by the hardcore, or the shingle.Read more ›
The hole took ages to dig in chalk and fortunately we had just had an extension done so we had plenty of broken bricks to support the unit.
All the garden dog poo goes in (3 a day!) and we stir it once a week (a bit smelly) and flush it through every 3 or 4 weeks depending on how sludgy it is on stirring (also a bit smelly). And essentially it does what it says on the label and is tonnes better that binning and incinerating!
Q. Easy to install? A. Relatively - but needs a bit of effort
Q. Any flies? A. No
Q. Any maggots? A. No
Q. Smelly? A. No - except for 5-10 mins after stirring or flushing
Q. Environmentally friendly? A. Absolutely!
I don't know how one would tell if the poo is being broken down but there is no ghastly pong and no flies. I also assume that what I put in yesterday will not have broken down as much as what I put in 5 days ago. I would guess that if the product was not doing its job (no pun intended) the water in the bottom container would become increasingly sludgy and this is not the case so.......I am happy and now I only use poo bags when we go for our walk.

Works as described if you put it in the ground properly, do not block the vents and order the blue liquid capsules.Published 18 days ago by Lord Heathen
Seems like a good idea but this is gross and the flies are gathering. I can see myself filling it in with soil soon...Published 25 days ago by PERKS
