Product Description

Product Description

Gonwards is a new collaboration between Peter Blegvad and Andy Partridge, released through Andy Partridge’s Ape House Records. The musicians met while signed to Virgin Records, songwriter, cartoonist, teacher – Blegvad, as a member of Slapp Happy was one of its earliest signings, while Andy Partridge’s reputation as one of England’s finest songwriters is primarily due to his role as founder member of XTC – the best band to emerge from the UK’s post-punk aftermath. The two first teamed up when Andy Partridge produced Peter Blegvad’s debut solo album – The Naked Shakespeare – in 1983 and they have worked together intermittently ever since. Their previous collaboration, the 2003 album Orpheus, the Lowdown, was released by Ape House Records & will be available again from October. Gonwards mixes spoken word with more song-based recordings, voiced by Blegvad and with music played, programmed and assembled by Andy Partridge and Stu Rowe in whose Swindon-based digital studio the recordings were made.

How do you sum up such a unique and wonderfully contrasting musical project as Gonwards using mere words? The usual go to choices, eclectic and experimental, hardly seem potent enough for such a Frankenstein. It's an album fashioned by musical magpies, everything from swampy blues to vaudeville, sunny calypso vibes to desolate eastern dirges flits past the listener, topped off with vocals, largely flatly delivered spoken word. But even if the building blocks may be comfortingly familiar, the resulting architecture is strangely fluid, being both futuristic and baroque and morphing through everything in between. The words themselves are as mysterious and challenging as the music that weaves around it. Kafka-esque descriptions of futuristic trombones that can be used as weapons, the nostalgia of childhood night time drives, plus the age-old question...do spark plugs think? Add to that the fact that people as disparate as Wordsworth, Jacques Cousteau and Omar Khayyam wandering through and you get an idea of just how lateral thinking, not to mention flippant, this all is.

It's difficult to think of another set of brains that could couple such wide reaching music with such deep thinking, witty and downright weird stories than the people behind XTC and Slapp Happy. The best way to sum up the way they mix accessible melody with the avant-garde, groove with experimentation is this; just think of it as the product of a new production team in the music industry - Stockhausen, Aitkin and Waterman. If only....

I love this. Blegvad has a smooth velvet voice that works perfectly with Partridge's imaginative musical creations. St Augustine is one of my favourite tracks ever. I bought this album months ago and it's still my first pick when looking for something to play. It does sound a little odd when you first listen... but give it a two or three listens and you'll be hooked. I just hope there'll be a Gonwards 2!

This is a very compelling piece of work that absolutely rewards repeat and repeat listening-kind of mad in places but very eclectic and fully formed. A future classic!

Literate and witty but not as brilliant as the review in Uncut magazines and Record Collector led me to believe it would be. Big fan of Andy Partridge but still cannot rave over this particular CD
