GENE PITNEY was one of the most prolific and successful international artists of the 1960s, releasing some twenty-five albums (plus a further dozen or so Greatest Hits sets) and around thirty-five singles. In the 1990s, Sequel Records paired up Gene s original LPs as two on ones, plus bonus tracks and all mastered from first-generation tapes. Pitney himself was delighted with the results. Sadly Gene died in 2006 whilst touring the UK, by which time these two on ones had long been deleted. However, thanks to RPM, these well-regarded compilations are once again available. Released in November 1964, Gene s fifth album It Hurts To Be In Love was retitled for the British market as I m Gonna Be Strong after the single which was then a hit and would peak at No.2 The UK LP also included I m Gonna Find Myself A Girl which had been withdrawn as a single in the US and likewise omitted from It Hurts... Similarly, when I Must Be Seeing Things was released in July 1965, its UK counterpart was titled after Gene s latest Top 5 hit Looking Thru The Eyes Of Love . Again, there were track variations: If I Never Get To Love You replaced There s No Living Without Your Loving on the UK pressing, and a UK EP included an extra in The Rising Tide Of Love . These two recordings, together with Last Chance To Turn Around (US No.13), are included here.

These two albums are great by anyone's standards, as a 2 for 1 cd they are top notch. The cd (70.38mins) comes with a colour 8 page booklet which does it job and no more. The sound quality is very good throughout. The quality of music never dips below 7/10 and for the most part stays around the 9 or 10/10 mark. The tracks come from the 1964 - 65 period with a bonus track from 1967. There are lots of hits both major and minor, great album tracks - with stellar names in the writing credits - Bacharach, Mann, Greenfield, Pomus, Jagger & Richards - there's even a fantastic song by Joe Meek - 'Lips are redder on you'. New to my ears tracks like 'If Mary's there' and 'Walk' are both outstanding. So much to admire, 27 tracks of pure class from a very distinctive voice. Overall, Highly recommended. 10/10.
