Sophie Daynes cherishes The Boathouse, inherited from her family and situated in remote, beautiful Cumbria.
But her boorish, layabout husband, in his forties and obsessed with his young mistress, is only interested in its cash value – and how best to get his hands on it.
With both temperatures and passions rising in the height of a searing hot summer, greed, gossip, and mystery combine to make this a volatile visit they won’t forget.
Is the suspicious man living in the woods nearby really a villain on the run?
And who are the shadowy figures ‘stalking’ Sophie from the lake edge?
When the pleasure steamer churns up more than mud, and a grisly package is discovered washed up on the shore, the lives of all connected with the Boathouse are changed dramatically and irrevocably…
‘One of the crime shelf's defter hands.’ Guardian
‘Gwen Moffat creates vivid characters and not only manages a fast-moving, well-patterned plot, but also shows an aptitude for brilliant atmospheric set pieces.’ Daily Mail

Gone Feral is truly possessed of a wild, atavistic quality; as the tale gallops along characters become increasingly bestial, actions increasingly frantic – but the true mastery lies in the quietly brilliant conclusion, imploding below the surface. Fuelled by the worst of human characteristics, greed, money-grabbing schemes and animal lust lead to characters taking the law into their own hands – but, as Chekhov said, put a loaded gun on stage and someone’s going to shoot it. All of this paired with such a peaceful, idyllic setting adds a uniquely chilling edge; this is certainly not a normal whodunit. Indeed there were so many red herrings, dead ends and fruitless leads that I began to question what might have been accidental and what had been done with intent; Moffat keeps the reader guessing until the final page.

Didn't quite get it right but was a good try. Part mystery. Part Detective story. But was neither fish nor fowl in the end. Good have been really good if edited better. Still. Perhaps it was me. So give it a try and write a review .

Sophie Daynes’ life changes forever when, as she is about to add the cream sauce to the prawns she’s making for her defensively aloof husband, the phone rings. Moffat’s highly charged crime thriller is expertly poised between comfortingly domestic scenes like these and concealed, monstrous acts of cruelty – gently insidious, the plot tiptoes as it unfolds, with a twist even after the final twist. With a fatal cocktail of lust, murder and passion coaxing you to consider which is really the most awful crime of all, the story is substantiated by thoroughly developed characters constantly justifying their own roles and motivations in attempt to evade culpability. Gwen Moffat teaches us that the lines between the ‘good guys’ and the ‘bad guys’ aren’t always so clean cut.
