If there`s one thing the late Johnny Cash and I have in common - let`s face it, there isn`t an awful lot - it`s that we`re both big fans of Dwight Yoakam.
I`ve (so far) got three of Dwight`s albums on CD: the incomparable This Time, the indispensable If There Was A Way, and Gone. There`s little to choose between them, so packed with great songs are they all.
Sorry You Asked opens this album in grand style, a plucked ruffle of guitar - those country musicians really are some of the best anywhere - leading into a fast-paced country rocker, which includes - what else? - mariachi trumpets. (This is one album where you never know what you`re going to hear next.) When Yoakam rocks he does it with elan, an effective restraint, and one hell of a lot of feeling. The song also has one of the best and most appropriate `fades` I`ve heard on any song.
The quite 60s-poppy Near You and more trad-sounding Don`t Be Sad are both terrific songs, sung & played to perfection by Dwight and his red hot band.
The title track hurtles along, buoyed up by a Duane Eddy-ish guitar backing from Pete Anderson, whose solo is brief & eloquent. Quite an asset to any band is Mr Anderson.
Nothing is a gorgeous ballad, and most welcome after the high energy of the preceding tracks.
This Much I Know & Baby Why Not - with its jokey, "Dwight sings low" ending - are good though not great songs, then comes the brilliant One More Night. This is an instant DY classic, and arguably the album`s highlight, a slow-tempo slow-burner, with one of those wonderfully tense vocals he summons up for songs like this. Unlikely as it may sound it features Pete Anderson on electric sitar, there in the mix. That Dwight, he`s full of ideas...

this c.d. by dwight yoakam is a fine c.d. full to the brim with traditional sounding songs heart of stone /neaver hold you/gone/ being just some this c.d. has fiddles banjos like you would expect from his music its like he has transported the 1940s 1950,s country SOUND to the 1980s from when he first appeared to this moument in time sounds of johnny horton mere haggared are two to compare him to he was big in the u.k. when he toured in the 1990s but he dont come no more its such a shame a crying shame this c.d is one i would recommend along with his first which has been re-issueed 20th anniversary called guitars ,cadillacs ,etc, etc, ALSO ANOTHER C.D. A truely brilliant CD, well worth the few quid it cost without a doubt...

The stand out track for me is number 10, Heart of Stone. Such a rich country twang in Dwight's voice.

If you need a reason to buy then look up the track on youtube or something and then you'll be hooked and will have to buy the whole CD!

Bet you!
