Alan Coren skilfully weaves the same fine fabric of the English Language into both the most exquisite garments and the most ragged trash. He treats the language with great respect and the subjects of his writing with a complete lack of it. With Coren, the use-of-the-language is all and the meaning and the lasting value to humanity is worthless. This is what he would have wished-for; for the language to endure and for the business of living to be recycled in units no bigger than a grain of sand. As with all our cherished scholars at The University of Life, he has passed from us but his words remain. To attempt to analyze the mind of T.E.Lawrence by fitting together his legacy of words and ideas produces few certainties; with Coren it produces none. I believe he would regard that outcome as an achievement !
