The golgen age of light music is long gone but the music is of considerable interest as it brings back memories. Of especial interest on this CD is one of EMI's original stereo test recordings from the 30s.

The selection of tracks is well chosen and the transfers are very good quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Musical Treasures! 13 Nov. 2009
By Martin Fass - Published on Amazon.com
There is so much to delight the ear in this special CD packed with music. 27 selections for a total of more than 77 minutes, and it is difficult to select one or two for brief comments here. I will try my best not to keep you TOO long reading this short review.

For one example, track number 9 is an orchestral piece by Morton Gould that will be familiar to many, "Pavanne." You may not know it by the title, but the first few seconds of this lilting arrangement as performed by Jay Wilbur's Serenaders will bring it all back to you. Who is (was) Jay Wilbur? The excellent liner notes by David Ades (who compiled this CD and many others (or all?) in the Guild Light Music Series, inform us, "He had a long career which encompassed numerous recordings in the 1930s for labels such as Dominion, Imperial and Rex, and a spell making mood music recordings for London publishers Boosey & Hawkes. Like several other musicians, when he found that his style fell out of favour in Britain after the war, he emigrated to continue his career in South Africa where he died in Cape Town."

Other tracks feature performers such as Mantovani, Johnny Douglas and Charles Groves, with various popular music groups and a special group of pieces played by "Seven Famous BBC Orchestras," including the BBC Theatre Orchestra.

It may be necessary to search a little at this website, but Amazon offers many, if not most, of the disks in this wonderful series, and at nice price tags.
