About the Author

Katie Andrews Potter grew up in Carmel, Indiana and at an early age grew interested in her family history. She would (and still does) spend hours upon hours looking through old books and records searching for one more branch to her family tree. Katie has always enjoyed writing and has piles of old spiral-bound notebooks filled with stories. It was on one trip to an old cemetery in Brown County, Indiana in 2009 when the storyline for Going over Home popped in her head. What if you found your own name on a headstone? What would it be like to meet your ancestors? From that day on the story took a hold in her mind until it was fully formed. Katie lives on the near eastside of Indianapolis with her husband, Ben and their children, Eliana and Micah, and a zoo of pets. She has her degree in Elementary Education and is pursuing her Master's in American History. 5.0 out of 5 stars Going Over Home, by Katie Andrews Porter 30 Oct. 2012
By Susan Y. Clawson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
GOING OVER HOME, by Katie Andrews Potter, is set in Southern Indiana in the present day, and in the Indiana of the 1830s as well. Maddie notices that her parents become evasive when she asks questions about their ancestors. A trip to Connor Prairie, where she discovers that the life style is oddly familiar, only feeds her curiosity. Following clues and delving into genealogical resources, she finds out more than she wanted to know. Can it really be that she was born a hundred years earlier than she was told? When she goes away to college, she discovers she has moved even closer to her family's past, and as she traces their secret journey from 1830s Indiana to the present, she realizes she has a decision to make: will she remain in the present, or return to the past to stay?

The title is a phrase from the folk song "The Wayfaring Stranger." While a work of fantasy, this book will awake an interest in history and genealogy if the reader doesn't already have one. It is a fun read that will appeal to youth and adults alike.
5.0 out of 5 stars Let it be true 5 Dec. 2013

I bought this and read it all in the same day. Love it! Great book! Two of my favorite subjects, genealogy and time travel, in one very intriguing book. I would love to find that this story was truth not fiction. I would immediately go back and hunt down my Ancestors, and make sure they left substanial records for me to find ithis time around. I heartly recommend this book to anyone one who is interested in family, genealogy, time travel or those who have the imagination to believe that a journey such as Maddox's could actually happen. I will be looking for other books by the author…and I need to ask KATIE, is there a reason Henry is a "potter"? I believe that could be considered a clue.
4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Story 17 Aug. 2016

This was a beautiful story about a young girl who wants to find out more about where she came from. It was a quick, light read and I think all ages could enjoy it.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars because I believe the book could have benefited from more length and more detail.

Definitely worth a read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Different for me 29 Jan. 2013
By Melina Mason - Published on Amazon.com

This was a great book. I don't usually read time travel books, but this one was intriguing. It got really good towards the end, so I would recommend reading it to find out what happens. Katie did a great job with this book.

Maddie never realized that her family was any different than anyone else's till she went to school. Her family was old fashioned and they never told her or her sister's anything about thier family. When she went to school, she got curious. Then when she went to college whe found out the truth, they were from the past. And her and her sister have to go back, but there is someone trying to stop them. Again, this was a very well written story and it changed my mind about time travel novels.
5.0 out of 5 stars It kept getting better and better and better! 28 Oct. 2012

This book was written by one of my oldest friends, but even if I didn't know the author, I would've loved it! Sisterly friendship, adventure, mystery, a leap in time, a villian, and even a little romance all tied together with a solid narrative voice make this book a winner. I felt like I was right there with Maddie on her journey to figure out the mystery of her past and decide her future. That mystery is NOT predictable at all, and there are enough twists in the plot to keep you turning pages. Fast. The action just kept picking up--right when I thought it was about to plateau and wind down to the end, something else happened. I could not put this book down. Give it a try--it just keeps getting better and better...and better!
