Great new recording from Martin O'Connor Band. Traditional yet fresh. Heard then at Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago - go find them on tour, and grab this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Is The Place 30 May 2012

The band is named for Mairtin O'Connor, the button accordionist, who has an impressive resume in Irish traditional music as well as Irish-inflected pop and rock. But I'd describe this trio as a true supergroup. The virtuosity of O'Connor's playing is matched by that of fiddler/banjoist Cathal Hayden and guitarist/singer Seamie O'Dowd.

Together, this superb ensemble covers the whole terrain of Irish traditional music and then seamlessly integrates jazz, gypsy (Django-style) and touches of rock 'n roll. "Indifference" demonstrates O'Connor's skills in the breezy musette waltz style, "The Mountains of Pomeroy" displays Hayden's gorgeous tone and poetic phrasing on a lovely air, and O'Dowd shows off his earthy, heartfelt singing on the ballad, "Believe me Sligo." O'Dowd is also a superb guitarist, but you need to see them in person to really get that.

The title of the CD is appropriate, because they cover a lot of ground, all of it beautiful. While there's no substitute for hearing this top-drawer band in person, GOING PLACES is an exciting excursion in Irish music. Highly recommended.
