Die-hard fans will probably already own all of the titles in this release, but as a starting point for anyone wanting to explore the Godzilla films this set is simply perfect.
All the films are presented in both their original Japanese versions and their dubbed U.S. versions (often with added scenes).
All the films have feature commentaries, although additional extras are a little thin on the ground.
What struck me upon opening the package was how beautifully presented it is. The whole thing screams quality, and it's clear it was put together by people who know and love these films.
The films themselves naturally vary in quality, and if you've never seen a Godzilla film you'd be well advised to rent one to be sure they're to your taste before splashing out on this set. But if you've seen just one and enjoyed it, you'll enjoy this.
Other reviews on here already cover the movies themselves, so I'll start by identifying what is different in this latest 2011 issue of the boxset.
Rather than the previously mentioned individual sleeves, we now have two multi-disc plastic cases, each housing four discs - so eight discs in total - placed together into a thin card slipcase. All of the extras are on the discs themselves; no extra playthings or souvenirs. But there are some items of content that don't seem to have been mentioned in reviews of the earlier 2007 issue.
It varies across each disc, but there are biographies, image galleries, trailers and poster slideshows here, plus the audio commentaries and usually two versions of each of seven films. Why two versions? Well there's the original Japanese version, with English subtitles, then there's the re-edited version for the American release that has its dubbed English - but the re-editing went way beyond just adding voices; whole scenes were swapped and changed. And yes, you read that correctly, there are eight discs and seven movies. Because the original film is so iconic and so substantively different in its original and American versions it has been awarded a separate disc for each. Makes sense to me.Read more ›

What you get is:
Godzilla, King of the Monsters (6/10)
Godzilla Raids Again (10/10)
Mothra vs Godzilla (10/10)
Ghidorah, The Three Headed Monster (10/10)
Invasion of the Astro Monster (10/10)
All Monsters Attack (1/10)
Terror of Mechagodzilla (10/10)
You get both Americanized and Original subtitled versions of each films to suit whatever preference you have. The newer version of the box set is horrible featuring 2 standard DVD cases in a slipcover, the original version with a separate case for each one and a big box over it was so much better and you could also take them out and put them in order with the rest of your collection should you get more but it's probably pretty rare now and you'd be better off just buying them separately.
Should you get this box set, for introduction to the other eras I would recommend, Godzilla vs Biollante, Godzilla vs King Ghidorah, Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla II and Godzilla vs Destoroyah for the Heisei era and Godzilla: Final Wars for the Millennium series.
