After reading the Clovenhoof series by Heide and Iain it took me a little longer to get into Godsquad. As it's a story based on heavenly beings for some reason I kept thinking that some of the characters from Clovenhoof would make an appearance. Once I realised they weren't going to I finally settled into the story and thoroughly enjoyed it.

In Godsquad we meet 3 wonderfully different characters, Joan of Arc, Francis of Assisi and St Christopher.

All 3 Saints are sent to earth to find Mary, mother of Jesus who seems to have disappeared. Through the search the authors take us on a humorous journey through France where the characters seem to go from one hilarious incident to another.

The three main characters have such different personalities which I think made the story more enjoyable as they have to work with each other whether they like it or not.

I really would love to see this book made into a film. As a reader I could really visualise some of the messes the 3 Saints get themselves into and would love for everyone young and old to be able to enjoy the antics in this wonderful book.

I don't know how Heide and Iain come up with these wonderful books but they have got to be my number one favourite writing duo. With books like these two publish it is really hard to do justice in a review for how fabulous they are and all I can say is that as a reader you will certainly not regret getting any of their books. So what are you waiting for?

Initially I wasn't sure about this novel , perhaps because it is not my usual genre of books I enjoy but I was proved wrong . Heaven gets a call from Simon , someone who appears to have no soul and despite the urgent matter only Mary , Mother of God will do to sort out his problem . No problem you think , just nip down the Celestial Halls and ask her , BUT Mary has gone AWOL and was last seen somewhere in Holland . A search party is what is required and so Joan of Arc , St . Christopher ( patron saint of travel) and St. Francis of Assisi are selected to locate Mary and get to the solving Simon's problem. From their arrival on earth ( on a ferry bound for Holland) to a nail biting finale this book just took you along for a hilarious ride. Problems with money , Portaloo's and a giant helium penis shaped balloon had me laughing my way through it. My favourite character had to be the wolf , St.Francis' pet who while was never planned to be in the search party managed to join them and lead ( among other things) a team of canines in the final mission.
Well written reminding me a little of Terry Pratchett's style of writing , this book is a must if you enjoy a little magical escapism but are not easily offended at some of the references to religion .
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Well theoretically this is Clovenhoof book 3, but the title character doesn't appear. Instead of this, we've got Joan of Arc, St. Christopher and St Francis on a mission to Earth to try and find Virgin Mary. The godsquad will be familiar to anyone who has read the [book:Satan's Shorts collection of short stories, and Clovenhoof book 1.
Naturally none of the saints have been in the mortal world for a few years, so this is a new experience for the three of them.
It's a road trip novel, as the three of them go across Europe, occasionally bumping into a Welsh Womans Institute, which causes it's own issues.
It's not as manic as the earlier books, doesn't have quite as many laugh out loud moments as the earlier ones, but even so it's still rocking good fun.

Having adored both Clovenhoof and Pigeonwings I thought I might miss Jeremy. As it happens I didn't. The "Godsquad" were almost as good as Jeremy.

A prayer has come in from Simon. Simon doesn't seem to have a soul, so Joan of Arc, Saint Christoper and Francis of Assisi have been sent back to earth to track down Mary Mother of Jesus and then find Simon. Mary has gone AWOL in Europe and Simon seems to be counting down to the Apocalypse, so it's a bit urgent that Joan and friends find them.

This story was a road trip with a difference. The cast are out of time and out of this world too. They meet up with people who help them and those that hinder them, although they certainly hinder themselves with ease.

I love this author(s) writing. It's fast-paced, funny and irreverent. A joy to read indeed.

I didn't mean to read this in one day! I loved the first three books in the series and Godsquad didn't disappoint me. Three minor characters from the previous books (4 if you count the wolf of Gubbio); St Joan of Arc, St Francis and St Christopher got their chance to lead the action in this whirl wind adventure through Europe. After the first chapter I didn't notice that Jeremy et al. were missing as Joan, Francis, Christopher and Mary had me gripped. The humour is the same brilliant Midlands humour from the first books, irreverent but affectionate, and not offensive, and the cameos from the Rev. Evelyn Steed, The Aberdaron WI, lead by Nerys' Mum, and St Michael in a blink and you'll miss him moment linked the book to the rest of the series. Godsquad has opened up a whole new dimension to the Clovenhoof world which will keep the series fresh. I am looking forward to the next book!
