This is the fourth and final volume in the acclaimed "Emperor" series, in which Conn Iggulden brilliantly interweaves history and adventure to recreate the astonishing life of Julius Caesar. Caesar must fight his toughest battle yet - with Rome itself. Julius Caesar, fresh from triumph in Britain and Gaul, is marching on Rome with his legions of hardened veterans. His goal: to unseat Pompey, now dictator of the Empire. But waging war on your own people is never easy. And even after the city itself is taken and Julius, Brutus, Mark Antony and Octavian re-enter in triumph, there are many battles left to fight. For across the Empire - in Spain, Africa, Greece, across Asia Minor - there are legions loyal to Pompey. How will Caesar prevail? And at what cost? "The Gods of War" is the story of ambition and loyalty, of friendship and power, of love and war.A famous tale, of truly epic dimensions, it ranges from Rome to Greece to Egypt and back to Rome; it shows how brilliant generalship can completely turn the odds, how overwhelming success can change even the best of men; it depicts brilliantly those famous names - Caesar, Marcus Brutus, Mark Antony, Pompey, Cicero, Cleopatra, Ptolemy - so that they appear anew. This is a triumphant conclusion to the outstanding "Emperor" series. See all Product description

The author has a wonderful way of making you feel like you are there. In parts I felt the story at times would jar, but this can be forgiven as I may have been reading with tired eyes after reading so much each sitting due to the excitement and intrigue the story brings.
Character wise, Renius is my favourite. I picture Oliver Reed from Gladiator every time he comes into it. Great story with real substance and heart.
This particular one was the first one Alex Jennings narrated and it is amazing how, even early on, he has a talent for the voices and a skilful clear narrative. The plot may be a little slow at first, but that is typical of biographical novels, and the action that begins on the third CD is well paced and compelling.
Since I have heard all but one of the rest of the series before this one, I would recommend this audio CD on its own merits as a good foundation to build the rest of the series on (though the order of reading is not especially important). The Emperor series make for brilliant and engaging adventure novels which help long journeys go by like a breeze!
Ge with a backdrop of civil war, romance
Though I preferred The Gods of War and found the first hundred pages of the Gates of Rome meandering; but of course you have to start somewhere to introduce the characters of such an epic task of five novels. I stuck to it and found it to be brilliant. Of course not much is known about Ceaser's youth and childhood yet by putting a little flesh on the bones and using your own imagination you get caught up and carried along quickly in the whole story. Fantastic.
Now on to Book 2. I'm sure I'll soon be on Book 5 by Christmas. You wont be disapointed with this book if you let your imagination take you and appreciate the best is yet to come.
