Hero 5 Session Camera
Curved & Flat sticky adhesive Mounts
USB C charging cable
Worth noting - it doesn’t come charged, so it won’t turn on fresh out of the box. (Well, mine didn’t anyway.) Just a heads up if it’s an excited christmas morning present, a full charge from empty takes about 3 hours.
10MP Photo (comparison: Iphone 5s is 8MP)
Time lapse capability
4K video at max 30fps
1440p QHD at max 60fps
1080p HD at 90fps
Takes MicroSD cards - for video of 1080p and above i’d recommend at least a class 10, or your footage may be liable to be jumpy or ‘drop frames’. The SanDisk 64GB Extreme is a good option, that’s what i’ve used with all my GoPros so far with no problems yet.
The 60fps & 90fps options allow slow motion. Convert them down to 30fps and you’ll either have half speed or 1/3 speed.
4K…The camera technician in me can’t get started on why this is a useless marketing gimmick for this camera (IT’S NOT REAL 4K….AAARGH) and though the footage looks impressive, I would urge you to ask yourself why you’d need this. It’s good. It works. But don’t have it be the sole judgement on whether you get a camera or not.
It’s been well designed. The button on the top has enough space around the frame to press play even with bulky gloves on.
The voice control works, but classically not in the situation you’d want it to. On a noisy and busy street with it on top of your head, a strong shout is required before it will acknowledge. (And also good luck to the British for trying to get on board with that concept.)
App isn’t great, tested on the iPhone 5. It works, and the app itself is fluid and functional, but at times i’ve had a severe lag that’s made it worthless and app usage seems like a bad idea with battery life of the phone also. One of them that works in principle, sadly not so much in reality.
The cube size is definitely it’s stand out plus point. So robust, GoPro are good at doing that over their competitors. I’ve cut it in to a tennis ball and thrown it to the dog, and i’m sure it lends itself to many more creative uses. (Secret filming by cutting it in to a book perhaps?)
If you’re looking at this as a previous GoPro owner looking to upgrade, it does have some improvements from previous versions. The body itself is waterproof and no longer requiring an external case (takes a lot of the worry away!) and the build itself seems better - hinged connection socket flap (no longer with that separate rubber cover to lose) flush buttons, better screw pin lock, much clearer and obvious display, and of course, image capability and quality.
The casing and size has obviously changed, but everything the mounting buckle and below is still compatible with previous GoPro accessories.
The battery is now internal which considering this one seems made for the cyclist who may be out for hours at a time, or even the holiday user also playing with it for some time, it seems ridiculous to not be able to have spare batteries.
After around a month of constant use, the battery at first lasted 2 hours from full charge and straight recording - now we’re at around an hour, after approximately 30 recharges (from full discharge). It worries me how bad this could get, and also that it requires a return to GoPro and not just forking out for a different GoPro.
The glass screen covering the lens at the front as part of the waterproof seal of the whole thing, I can see getting smashed very easily. It is removable via 8 minuscule star screws…almost like they saw that one coming. And good luck finding a screwdriver.
From experience I do think GoPro have superiority in image quality of their action cameras alone, and this one is no exception. It produces some fantastic images. But as the session, the modelling of this particular one and factoring in the cost, it’s a great camera but in my opinion not worth how much it costs. For the same price you could get the black edition of the 4 series, or for half the price, the original session - which would give you all the size/versatility benefits of this and also the fun element if that’s what you’re looking for.
One thing that annoys me is to use some of the features you must use the phone app and the app requires constant internet access while using it which is silly you should just be able to install the app and use it offline. If the app worked offline id of given 5 stars.
Secondly: there is an app, but it requires access to your facebook account (!) and they WILL NOT LET YOU connect to your camera until you give GoPro access to your Facebook. There's no excuse for this.
Thirdly: even if you give them your details, GoPro will not allow you to connect to your camera from your phone unless you have a strong GPS signal, strong cellphone/mobile network signal, and bluetooth enabled. Instead of implementing a secure login/password/etc, they make it so the camera simply cannot be used without GPS access.
Live in a city center with poor GPS / mobile coverage? Work in an office with no GPS? Forget it - GoPro doesn't want you to use your camera.
...all of this has been written on the app reviews, on their website, many many times. You can see the complaints going back years. But GoPro chooses not to fix any of this. So ... don't buy!
Configured mine to use Video @ 4K 30frames per sec - very easy to use, battery did die on me once probably from around 3hrs use. I can understand why later models have changeable battery.
Comes with standard USB / USB type C cable.
Lack of screen not too much of an issue, If I need to view I used the GoPro App on my phone.
Very easy to configure, great field of view, very happy with purchase.
This model is now no longer manufactured, but if you do find one I would recommend you purchase especially if it's your first GoPro.
