It purports to be a slow cooker cookbook for Gluten Free and Paleo diets with easy recipes. I bought the ebook to review it before buying the full colour paperback for my husband while he lives away. He's new to slow cooking so this needed to be a basic intro. It tries, but has some sweeping generalisations that may catch the unwary.
For instance, the general advice for slow cookers suggests those with removable pots can be put in the oven, are microwave safe and can be submerged to wash. This is not true for some very popular slow cooker brands I can mention.
It warns that gluten can hide in the unlikeliest of products, then has recipes that ask for things like tortilla chips and hash browns, which, depending on brand, may not be gluten free. A lot of recipes also ask for beef broth, which is almost impossible to find gluten free, though it's easy enough to substitute.
Lastly, the Paleo part is a bit 'modern Paleo' - a lot of the recipes call for pre-processed ingredients like crackerjack cheese, Worcestershire sauce and the aforementioned hash browns, and recommends cheap cuts of meat which will probably come off grain-fed cattle, so the health benefits are questionable.
As for simple recipes - well, there's a lot of different ingredients, some of which call for a cup of coconut milk or similarly exotic/potentially wasteful ingredients (what to do with the rest of the can?) which make the book unlikely to be as useful as I'd wish.
With various recipes to wet my appetite, one problem remains. How can I control my saliva?
Seriously though, lovely book with nice tasty recipes not just for gluten intollerant people.
Receipes American so some of the ingredients hard to find. Better books out there believe me!
