The French is simple but beautiful.
And Pagnol's description of the scenes of the Provence of his childhood in the 20s and 30s are wonderfully evocative....
Even if you've never been to Provence, let alone France the descriptions are so vivid that you can almost see the olive trees, feel the hot sun on your skin, hear the cicadas and smell the lavender as you brush against it. Even though this is the story of Marcel Pagnols' boyhood holidays you are unable to put this book down and wish it will never end, but sadly it does. It would be impossible to read one or the other books, they must both be read as one and you are left wondering how two such wonderful stories could end that way. No matter how many times you read these books, you will find yourself hoping that the ending will change this time. The only reason that i haven't given five stars is because this book is so much better in French! I have read both the original and the translation into English and there is definately something lost in the translation. This is such a shame for people who are learning French as some of the colloquialisms can be hard to understand. Nevertheless this book is worthwhile perservering with (but keep a tissue handy for the end).
