If it helps to decide wether you'd like this release, my favourite GU's are : Nick Warren Lima, Danny Howells NU Breed, John Digweed Shanghai, Danny Howells Miami, Sasha Ibiza, Nick Warren Paris, Nick Warren Reykjavik, Satoshi Tomi Nu Breed and John Digweed Los Angeles.
GU40 see’s the iconic label travelling to the city of Hamburg, introducing DJ Solomun to the decks for the first time in GU history. Split in two, the first mix takes a welcomed scenic detour around the softer side of DJ Solomun’s and Global Underground’s outer frequencies, focusing on the more downbeat enclosed section of its ever expanding fan base. Built upon a stringent arrangement of qualified placements, the set originates from within a translucent concentration of silhouetted liquid models and intimately shaped airy extremes that when worked together, are used responsively to create a deep, shaded and mistily designed space. Cold on the outside, but cohesively warm on the inside, the set’s resolution is opened up with a definitive after-hours feel by the subtle fusion of production frontiers from both GU and DJ.Read more ›
The compilation comes in two halves. The first mix on CD one is down-tempo, chilled and slightly minimal. It is very melodic and the general theme of the CD reminded me of bells and chimes. It is also quite avant-garde; because there are a lot of new sounds coming through.
The second CD is laid back, sleazy prog house. It is quite gritty and once more there is a sense of novelty about it. The whole compilation spells inventiveness and exploration. This is not work by a DJ who is repeating old tunes and sounds; which is what can happen in Dance/House compilations quite often. Which is why I think GU are back at the cutting edge of EDM; trying new sounds and being avant-garde.
Great stuff. If these two CDs sound as good in a years time as they do today then I will call this compilation a classic!

This gets a one star rating from me because it is terribly boring. The mixing is ok, but the tracks move nowhere and leave me indifferent. Read morePublished 21 months ago by MortenK
Awesome compilation. While this may not be my favorite GU, it's a great comeback after a nearly-4-year hiatus.Published 21 months ago by Jeremy Brown
