Hmmm. I was left with a kind of "so what" feeling about the content of this book. I never came out of it with an idea of how I might look at travel writing in a new way that added an extra level of insight or enjoyment to my reading of the genre. The whole thing appears to be the product of discourses of concern to academics but of little interest to me as a 'general reader' of travel literature. Yes, Bryson is glib and his humour wears thin. Yes, Theroux is a grumpy bastard but therein often lies the humour in his writing. It seems to me that anyone attracted to read travel literature wants to read about difference. That necessitates a starting point for the author. Dr Lisle just seems to find travel authors annoying to greater or lesser degree. What is it she wants them to do? Not write at all? I suspect the authors she critiques are following Liberace's advice and laughing all the way to the bank. I suspect Ms Lisle did not write this book for economic advantage but to score a "published" tick for her university performance agreement. I am now re-reading Chichester's "The Lonely Sea and the Sky" with much greater enjoyment.
